Ryan's Weekly Family Update
3.11.24
Message from the Principal
Dear Ryan Elementary Community,
Thank you to everyone that attended and/or supported Ryan’s Annual Trivia Night. Wow, our PTA went above and beyond to plan, organize and pull off that event. It was a ton of fun and raised a lot of money for our school. Thank you to everyone for supporting our students, staff and community.
Each spring our students get to spend time in our school garden for a focused lesson related to grade level standards. We are so grateful to our teachers, parent leads and volunteers who make this happen with the Garden to Table program. If you have questions about when this lesson will happen and how to help out, please contact your child’s teacher. In addition, you can learn more by visiting the program’s website at https://gardentotable.org/.
If your child is in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade, please click below for the CMAS testing schedule in April. If you have any questions, please email me at stephanie.jackman@bvsd.org or you can reach out to Mr. Chavez, our Assistant Principal, at joseph.chavez@bvsd.org. Students that participate will be honored with an A.G.E. Ryan CMAS medal. Stay tuned for more information.
3rd-5th Grade CMAS Testing Schedule
April is Autism Awareness Month. Did you know that Ryan Elementary has an Intensive Learning Center (ILC) for students with Autism? If you are interested in learning more about programming offered at Ryan and in BVSD, please refer to the information on our school district’s website, BVSD Intensive Learning Centers. Our ILC program at Ryan Elementary is one way our school focuses on inclusion for all while celebrating all of our strengths and unique needs.
March 18th-March 25th is Neurodiversity Celebration Week. “When it comes to inclusion, neurodiversity refers to a world where neurological differences are recognized and respected as all other human variations”. Click here to see the plan created by our Student Council to celebrate this week at Ryan.
It’s always a great day to be a Rhino! Go Rhinos!
Sincerely,

After school field and playground use
At the end of each school day, BVSD School Age Care (SAC) uses our fields and playgrounds from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Parents/guardians of non-SAC students are welcome to stay with their children and use the playground, as long as they maintain direct supervision. This will help the SAC staff better care for their enrolled students and maintain compliance with child care laws and regulations.
Safe gun storage saves lives
As you may have heard, U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and the White House have joined the effort to promote the safe storage of firearms through public appearances and the new safestoragesaveslives.com website.
Understanding that firearms are now the leading cause of death among children in the United States and that secure firearm storage is an important part of keeping families safe, the Boulder Valley School District, in collaboration with parents in our community, took action. Three years ago our Board of Education passed Resolution 21-12 in Support of Secure Storage and the district has been regularly communicating the Be SMART message:
Secure all guns in your homes and vehicles
Model responsible behavior around guns
Ask about unsecured guns in other homes
Recognize the role of guns in suicide
Tell your peers to Be SMART
Together we can keep our children safer. We fully support the efforts by Secretary Cardona and Everytown for Gun Safety and encourage everyone to learn more at BeSMART and Safe Storage Saves Lives and take action to save lives.
Updated COVID-19 Guidance
In alignment with the March 2024 updates from the CDC and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), we have updated our guidance for students and staff who test positive for COVID-19. The updated guidance aligns recommendations for a range of viral respiratory illnesses such as Flu and RSV.
If someone tests positive for COVID, Flu, RSV, or is experiencing any respiratory illness
They should stay home until symptoms are improving and for at least 24 hours after fever has resolved without the use of fever-reducing medications
When going back to normal activities, take added precautions over the next five days, such as hand and respiratory hygiene, masks, physical distancing, and/or testing when you will be around other people indoors.
Please remember, regardless of COVID status - stay home when sick
You can find more information on COVID-related illness and other common illnesses and guidelines for school attendance in CDPHE's How Sick is Too Sick and through your school's health team.
Message from Ms. Chrystal in the Health Room
Healthy students are better learners, please keep your child home if they feel ill, CDPHE’s Illness Policy for Students and Staff in School and Child Care: Policy
Please remember to send your child a change of clothes, especially in our younger elementary grades but it would be great if every kiddo had a full set of spare clothes in their backpack including socks and underwear. We have all sorts of accidents and often kiddos prefer clothes of their own and don't forget gloves and hats too.
Also if you have gently used/new leggings or sweatpants/joggers boys and girls of all grades, please email our health room para chrystal.terhune@bvsd.org to add them to our back-up! We are completely out but only have room for a few sets so email to see if we can use them. Thank you
Attendance Annoucement
If your child has an appointment during school hours, please ask the medical office for a school excuse note and bring it to the Ryan office.
To report your child's absences, please enter it through your Parent Portal or call the Attendance Line 720.561.7002 and remember to include the REASON FOR THE ABSENCE!
We understand sometimes our students need to be out for an extended period of time. We ask, if you know your child will be out for more than 3 days, to please fill out this form in addition to reporting the absence through the portal or attendance line.
Good habits start early! Research shows regular attendance at school has a DRAMATIC impact on student progress. Please see the How Sick Is To Sick guidelines as well as the BVSD attendance policy.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering is a fun, simple way to get involved within the Ryan community. We have all sorts of opportunities to get involved. Whether you volunteer regularly in your teacher’s classroom or bring treats and coffee to teachers for late start or volunteer for the upcoming book fair, the impact can be huge. Not only does it benefit the school but it benefits your kids and families in our community as well! Please take a moment to explore this link: https://www.bvsd.org/parents-students/get-involved/volunteers you may need the Raptor check and a CBI Background/fingerprint check. These are both good for 12 months.

We appreciate your help! Thanks!
BVSD's School Messenger support and notifications
Boulder Valley School District recently tested their emergency alert system.
The test alert included a phone call, text message and email to those opted in to receive BVSD Communications.
Users can adjust their communication preferences as desired via these instructions.
If you did not receive a text message, and would like to opt-in to receive text messages from the district and schools through SchoolMessenger, opting-in is a two-step process:
- The person's cell phone number must be in a cell phone field in Infinite Campus (students/parents) or Infor/Lawson (employees).
- They then send a text message from their cell phone to “67587” with the word “yes” in the message. They may opt-out at any time by texting “STOP” to 67587.
