Megan Hallett is an educator in Utah; she leads Family Art Studio, a free afterschool program where families gather to share a meal and make art together while building a strong community. In this session, the families worked on oil pastels to make pet portraits. Part of the class is that the students are involved in the teaching process and show their parents how to draw and paint.

In this episode of UEN’s PDTV, host Katie Blunt visits Escalante Elementary in Salt Lake City to meet with the school’s Beverly Taylor Sorensen visual arts specialist, Megan Hallett. Meet the Onaqui Catalogue Foundation, a nonprofit organization providing accessible view opportunities of Utah’s most iconic wild horse herd, the Onaqui. Learn more about how they use community-based citizen science to document and share information about the herd.

In this episode of UEN Homeroom, Dani and Matt are in the studio with Utah's First Lady, Abby Cox and Deputy Director of First Lady Initiatives, Sarah Allred. Join us in a conversation about the First Lady's “Show Up” initiatives and how they’re helping build stronger communities that empower our educators and students throughout the state. Then, they share small everyday steps you can take to “Show Up” for your local teachers and their work.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made a remarkable entry into education, leaving educators with a mix of emotions. In this course we’ll help you navigate this new frontier by looking at different types of AI and how they’re used, the ethical challenges and dilemmas of AI in education, how AI changes teaching and learning, and how you can design activities and assessments with AI in mind. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about how AI fits, or doesn’t fit, into their teaching practice. Register here.

Last week, the UEN Professional Development Team spent the week at the Utah Rural Schools Association Conference with hundreds of rural educators from across the state. The team presented dozens of sessions to hundreds of educators on topics ranging from digital literacy to creativity and developing personalized learning in classrooms. Educators are increasingly expected to exhibit skills and knowledge of using technology to enhance student learning. The UEN Educational Technology Endorsement Program is grounded in the USBE EdTech Competencies and the Utah Effective Teaching Standards. The Competency-Based Educational Technology Endorsement is divided into four courses. Participants will come away with a portfolio of work that aligns with each competency.

Scrible, a free tool for Utah educators and students, that helps learners collect, annotate, and write essays using research from around the internet is now available on iPads. If your classroom uses iPads students can now use Scrible in their Safari browsers as an add-on. For more information about this update, check out the link below.
