Shimek Shout Out
March 2018
A Message From the Principal
Welcome to spring! We are very excited for warmer weather and fun activities both inside and outside of school. Our PTO’s big event is coming up Saturday, March 3rd! Please join us for a fun, FREE afternoon of games, treats, and more. An incredible list of items will be available for bids during the silent auction as well. Thank you to the PTO members, parents, and teachers who have been helping put this all together! It will take even more volunteers on Saturday. Thank you in advance to everyone involved!
With spring comes the beginning of daylight savings time, spring break, and many after school activities. Please be sure that your student is getting enough rest each night. It is important to be well rested in order for students to do their best and learn each and every day.
If you have any follow up questions for teachers after attending parent teacher conferences, please feel free to set up another meeting. It is a short amount of time to cover many topics. If you have particular questions for me, a specials teacher, or regarding a transition to junior high or the next grade, please email me or the appropriate staff. We are all here and willing to do what is best for all students.
We wish you an enjoyable and relaxing spring break with your families this month! Please let me know if you have any questions!

Shimek Library News
Black Girls Do Science
Black Girls Do Science is a one-day program encouraging underrepresented girls in 4th-8th grades to pursue a career in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) field.
As the Daily Iowan reported, "The title draws attention to not only the lack of black women in STEM fields — who make up 2 percent of engineers and scientists in the United States — but to also counter the ignorant notion that black people, black women in particular, are incapable, uninterested, or unqualified to perform exemplary work in STEM fields."
With sponsorship from the College of Medicine, College of Engineering, John Deere, Rockwell Collins, and many others, we hold various workshops promoting STEM.
While this event is targeted for African-American girls in fourth through eighth grades, we would gladly accept anyone who would like to attend this event! This event is not exclusive to black girls.

FilmScene Animation Camp
ANIMATION CAMPS NOW OPEN FOR SPRING & SUMMER!
Following the success of our expanded animation summer camp, FilmScene announces today the opening of our 2-day spring break camp for girls and seven week-long summer sessions—eight weeks of stop-motion fun generously supported by Hills Bank and Trust.
Our summer camp will again be led by creative local animator and educator Mark Jones, and we are thrilled to host talented University of Iowa graduate Kelly Gallagher, who will return to Iowa City as part of our WOMEN'S MARCH program in part to offer an animation camp especially for young female filmmakers.
Both spring and summer, Iowa City area kids have a chance to make their own animated movies in FilmScene's camp for young moviemakers!
Animation campers will work in teams to produce, direct, and edit their own animations—totally from scratch. Each day we will learn about different animation styles (GIFs, claymation, light & shadow puppets, hand-drawn cartooning, video game sprites, and more) and make mini-movies that will give us a better understanding of what is possible in animation. We will learn about the Principles of Animation to make our movies more polished and professional. For the closing ceremonies, we will premiere our movies for family and friends in FilmScene's Scene 1 cinema!
Scholarships
With the generous support of Hills Bank and Trust, a limited number of full and partial scholarships will be available to area students with demonstrated need. Please contact rebecca@icfilmscene.orgto suggest a child for scholarship consideration.
