Staff Spotlight: Mr. Leaman
Mr. Leaman has taught at GMS for 11 years. He currently teaches 6th grade English, but he has taught at least 5 years of social studies as well. He has always enjoyed the staff and student relationships at GMS, where we all work hard and have fun at the same time.
Mr. Leaman grew up in the Harrisonburg, Virginia area, where he was homeschooled until 8th grade and then attended Eastern Mennonite High School. He received a two-year degree from Hesston College, a Bachelor's Degree at Eastern Mennonite University, and a Master’s degree at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Mr. Leaman is married and has 3 children who attend Model Elementary School. He is a huge baseball and college football fan, following the Atlanta Braves and Virginia Tech Hokies very closely. Some of his hobbies include bicycling, chess, birdwatching, reading, cooking and helping his children with their activities.
Girls on the Run: Heart and Sole
Any GMS 6th or 7th grade girl can apply to be a part of an after school program called Girls on the Run: Heart and Sole. Coaches will teach foundational lessons through dynamic discussions, activities, and running games. Over the course of ten weeks, girls will develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish an appreciation for health and fitness. At the end of the program, the girls will complete a celebratory 5K in South Bend on May 9th. After school practices will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:00. (Feb 25-May 12). Snacks and drinks will be provided for practices. The Heart and Sole program comes with a sliding scale fee, and payment assistance is available. There is space for 15 girls, and a second team will be added if needed!

GMS Yearbooks for Sale!
GMS Yearbooks are currently at the lowest price of the year for $27. If you purchase your 2019-2020 yearbook this month, you may purchase last year's book for only $5. If you didn’t get a GMS yearbook last year, you have a final opportunity to do so!
Starting February 1, the price for this year’s yearbook will increase from $27 to $30.
There will be a limited number of yearbooks ordered so it will be very important to pre-order. To order, drop off your payment to Mrs. Gingerich, GMS bookkeeper, in the main office.
Supplies for Science
Students in 8th grade IB science classes will be using their interactive notebooks on a more regular basis as we move into our unit on genetics, the study of heredity. As a result, 8th grade science teachers are in need of glue sticks and tape.
If you would be willing to send a few glue sticks with your 8th grade IB Science student; that would be appreciated!
8th Grade Colorado Trip 2020
The PE in the Rockies backpacking trip is an elective summer course/trip offered to 8th grade students who complete the school year in good standing. Students meet for a classroom session in April & May and then participate in a fifteen-day sightseeing and backpacking trip to Colorado in early July. Those who complete the classroom experience are able to earn one high school Physical Education credit.
The trip portion of the course includes visits to Colorado Springs (Garden of the Gods), Great Sand Dunes National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, Telluride, the Mt. Sneffels Wilderness Area, the Ouray Hot Springs, whitewater rafting and horseback riding. Students tent camp along the way, sharing a tent and camping equipment with a partner they have selected from the group. The trip culminates in a five-day wilderness experience during which students hike (both with and without packs), explore, and put into practice the wilderness skills they have learned in the classroom.
There will be an informational meeting about the trip for students and parents on Monday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the GMS Media Center.
