Our Commitment to Protecting Our Students
Dear San Diego Met Families,
At San Diego Met, our students flourish through the personalized and real-world learning opportunities that are the hallmark of our Big Picture Learning design, but the foundation of their success is the sense of well-being and safety they feel at the Met. To that point, several of the actions being undertaken by the current presidential administration regarding immigrants and the LGBTQIA+ community are deeply concerning for us as a school community that prides itself first and foremost on being a welcoming and inclusive space for all students, especially those who have been marginalized and targeted on the basis of identity.
This has been a topic of numerous discussions among our school district leadership and site leaders, as well as teachers and other school staff, and students and parents/guardians. The constant news and social media cycle has reinforced a climate of anxiety and uncertainty about how current political actions might impact the Met and our students. As such, I want to provide our community with clarity about how we at the Met are responding to this challenge.
As Principal of the Met, I want to affirm my stance that the Met is a school where every student deserves to feel safe, known, and loved as an individual. I and every member of our Met staff are committed to ensuring that this continues to be true despite the current political climate.
We are firmly aligned with the policies of our San Diego Unified School District and the San Diego Community College District, as well as California law (AB 699), which states that all students have the right to a public education regardless of immigration status. To support this, our School Board recently passed a resolution stating that District staff will support our community by “not assisting the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the enforcement of federal civil immigration law, and not permitting access to district facilities or personnel, except in instances in which the district is provided with a warrant.” All Met staff have been instructed that any law enforcement requests for student information related to immigration matters or citizenship status should be directed to me immediately, and our protocol will be to contact SDCCD police as well as our district’s School Police to respond to immigration officials directly. We will also inform parents/guardians of any students whose information has been requested.
We are also paying close attention to the attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community at the federal level, and in particular, the attempts at erasure of transgender identity and dignity. This is a particularly painful issue because many of our students have chosen to enroll at the Met because they see our school as a safe haven for transgender youth. I am committed to ensuring that our transgender students are protected and that all students and staff treat each other as people with inherent dignity and value. Any instances of bullying, discrimination, intimidation, or harassment are unacceptable. To support students in being protected, our district has implemented online reporting tools that may be used to report concerns. In addition, as a small school where students and adults know each other well, our students are welcome and encouraged to share their concerns with their advisor, other trusted adults on staff including myself and our counselor, Mr. Moravec, and we can also connect students with available resources at our school district that specialize in supporting youth with a variety of needs and concerns.
I encourage you to look at some of our school district’s resources at the Protecting Students and Staff website if you are interested in how our district is responding and what supports are available to you and your students. Together, we can support our students and each other through these challenges. As always, I invite you to reach out to me at rfung@sandi.net if you have any questions or would like to share your thoughts.
Thank you,
Robert Fung
Principal, San Diego Met High School
NEWS AND EVENTS
MetUp coming this Friday, February 21
Service Learning Day is coming this Friday. Last week students found out which organization they were paired with. They will get additional information this Wednesday in Advisory. Your student should have come home with a permission slip that they need to return as soon as possible.
On Friday, students should go directly to their volunteer site at the time designated. In some cases, students are meeting at school, but in others, the students go directly to the off-campus site. Again, students will get more information this Wednesday. Do reach out to your student's Advisor with any questions.

CLASS OF 2025
Financial Aid and Scholarships!
It’s time for our senior students and families to apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships for the 2025-2026 school year! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and California Dream Act Application (CADAA) are now open.
Our Senior Advisors and Mr. Moravec have already assisted students with setting up their FSA ID for the FAFSA application. Parents/Guardians will also need to create their own FSA ID in order to help complete the application for their student. For more information and support, please visit this site and use this application link to access the FAFSA application.
No matter what pathway your student is pursuing, there is financial aid available to help. We strongly encourage all families to apply for financial aid, regardless of income. Completing the FAFSA or CADAA is a requirement for many higher education institutions, especially if your student is seeking merit-based scholarships. Additionally, submitting the FAFSA or CADAA is necessary to be considered for the California Promise Grant at California Community Colleges.
Deadlines for FAFSA or CADAA:
- For 4-Year Universities: The state priority deadline is March 3, 2025.
- For Community Colleges: The deadline is September 2, 2025.
Scholarship Opportunities: Mr. Moravec regularly posts scholarship search links and information for seniors in the Class of 2025 College and Postsecondary Info Google Classroom (Class Code: b44kgvq). Check the top post for the latest links. Don’t miss out on these important opportunities to support your student’s future!
