Short Avenue IB Learners Strive to Be...
Mr. Lamb's Updates
Happy Weekend Short Avenue Families and Friends!
Happy Sunday to the Short Avenue Community! I hope you are in the middle of a fantastic four-day weekend. We do not get many of these treats in the calendar year so it is good to enjoy the extra time with family and friends and loved ones.
As a History major and a history buff I enjoy learning about the reasons why we have certain holidays. On Friday, LAUSD celebrated Admissions Day. I used to think this was something regarding the school year and admission into a school for enrollment. I have since learned that Admissions Day celebrates when California joined the United States of America. This happened in 1850 as California became the 31st state. Tomorrow we celebrate a federal holiday, Labor Day. This holiday, which started in the 1890s, grew out of many labor battles as workers clamored for better working conditions - one of the most well known events in this process was the Haymarket Riots in Chicago.
This is a week late due to publishing timing of the Weekly Wave but the gratitude and sincerity is not diminished by time. On Friday, August 22, a group of volunteers came and assisted my team with cleaning up a gigantic mess of obsolete textbooks. I thought the job was going to take hours. We had so many hands, however, that the project was completed very quickly. I appreciate our community for so many reasons. This is but one example of how we come together in support of our school and I know that there will be many more as we progress through the year. Thank you all again very much!
Now, please enjoy the extra days and time and the rest of your weekend.
See you Tuesday!

Peter Brown Coming to Short Avenue!
Exciting Author Visit Coming Soon!
We are thrilled to announce that our librarian, Ms. Levy, has arranged an incredible author visit for mid-September! Peter Brown, the acclaimed author and illustrator of The Wild Robot series, will be visiting our school! He will be giving a presentation for 2nd-5th graders.
The Wild Robot is a middle-grade fantasy novel. It tells the captivating story of a robot named Roz who mysteriously wakes up on a remote island. As she learns to survive in the wild, she forms unexpected bonds with the animals and uncovers what it truly means to be alive. This charming and thought-provoking book is a must-read!
The movie based on The Wild Robot is coming out on September 27th, so this is a perfect opportunity to read the book before seeing the film (while the book is usually better than the movie, the trailer looks wonderful!).
While this author visit is free for our school, we do need to purchase at least 50 copies from Childrens book World, who is organizing the event. Please help us reach our goal by ordering signed and personalized copies of the Wild Robot series . Stay tuned for more details on how you can order coming next week!
Birthday Policy
Families,
We want to remind you of our birthday party policy. In an effort to be equitable and keep our students healthy, we do NOT allow caregivers to send in cupcakes and treats for birthdays. While classes may organize celebrations for various occasions throughout the year, birthday parties should be held outside of school. Parents are welcome to arrange with the teacher to read a story in their child's class, or lead a fun birthday activity. Additionally, parents are welcome to donate something special to the class in honor of their child. We understand that birthdays are special , and every student and staff member will be recognized with a birthday song at our monthly assemblies.

** Please note a minimum enrollment is required per class by vendors. A handful of classes, listed below, may be subject to cancelation on Monday if student minimum is not met. **
• Theater with SM Playhouse
• Pokemon Social
• Arty Party • Improv
• Ideas & Innovation Lab
• Playground Masters.
If you are enrolled in one of these classes, you should have received an email letting you know that cancelation is a possibility. If you'd like to transfer to a different class, please send an email to ddc@friendsofshortavenue.org with the classes you want to move from and to.
Other classes that have between 10-13 kids will run for the first week in hopes that the minimum of 14 students is met. Got Game may cancel these classes after the first week if we can't get 14 students enrolled. We're hopeful that the following classes will meet the minimum enrollment requirement - LegoMasters, Hogwarts Academy and Flag Football.
Note: Some families have noticed some odd questions in the registration process, which is a glitch in Jumbula. If you encounter odd questions that don’t seem relevant (ie: asking about which college your child wants to attend!), please email DDC BEFORE you register and allow us to provide 1:1 assistance to help you enroll correctly.
To help fix the issues with the registration data, we sent out a Google form asking for basic information to help us create the rosters for the teachers and vendors. Please take approximately 1-2 minutes right now to fill out this google form to ensure children are released to the correct authorized caregivers and/or after school programs after their DDC enrichment classes. Please complete one per child.
Kindly complete this information ASAP as this will enable us to quickly provide complete rosters with accurate instructions to our enrichment vendors in anticipation of our first week of DDC, beginning Tuesday, Sept 3.
Thanks for your patience with our growing pains as we transition to our new platform Jumbula.
Please visit the DDC website (Friends of Short Avenue (jumbula.com)) to register for the enrichment classes offered this fall.
If you have any questions or issues with the registration process, please send an email to ddc@friendsofshortavenue.org
