“Are we destined to repeat our patterns, or do we generally stray in surprising directions?” This is the question in this episode of the Invisibilia podcast from NPR.
Take a listen, then think about this-
We all have dreams of what’s possible. We live with a voice that says “One day I will...” So, what
“possible life” has been with you the longest? Why has it remained a dream for so long?
And music!

DEACON KING KONG by James McBride
Deacon King Kong, Cuffy “Sportcoat” Lambkin is a 71-year-old deacon for a church in the projects. One day, he gets trashed and goes to the neighborhood plaza and shoots Deems Clemens, a ruthless 19-year-old local drug dealer. Sixteen people see the shooting, but no one talks. The author explores the aftermath of the shooting and the effect on both the people involved and others around them in this oft-neglected neighborhood in South Brooklyn.
Terri Ballas will be leading the discussion.

Notes From the Board
Monthly Meeting of the UUCSJS Board of Trustees
This Sunday
Return and Celebrate!
-Rev. Dawn Fortune
Each year in September, when Unitarian Universalist congregations return to community for worship, we celebrate by each bringing water (real or metaphorical) from a source that is important to us, and we mingle that water in a common pool. That water is then saved to be used in ritual celebrations throughout the church year. This year will be particularly poignant, as we have not gathered for communal worship since early 2020.
This service will be held inside the sanctuary at UUCSJS. Bring a small container of water from home to add to our common bowl. The service will also be livestreamed on our Facebook page.
From the UU Pandemic Response Team
We hope you all had an enjoyable and safe summer!
Now that we have had a few successful outdoor services, we are ready to move inside the building for our annual beloved water service in gathering.
In order to continue to stay safe and prevent spread of COVID, we are asking all participants to please adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Upon your arrival, please check in at the Welcome desk at the entrance to the UU Center to complete your Health and Safety pledge using the QR code (paper copies of the pledge will also be available)
2. Regardless of vaccination status, ALL participants must wear masks/ acceptable face coverings at all times while inside the UU Center building
3. Within the sanctuary, we will be asking participants to sit 6 apart. Household contacts may sit close together
4. In order to limit droplet spread, congregants will be asked to hum along with the hymns
5. There will be no formal coffee hour
6. After the service, we will encourage participants to exit out the East doors leading on to the deck (those with mobility needs may exit through the usual “front” / West facing doors.
7. We encourage everyone to continue conversations outside; however, due to New Jersey still being in the “High risk” range for COVID transmission, we are still asking everyone to continue to keep your masks on if you are engaging in outdoor conversations.
Upcoming Services
Join us on September 19th for "Marking Progress And Moving Forward" when we will consider where we are in our spiritual travels and what we’d like to explore next. Join us as we explore and embrace the possibilities before us!
Information on upcoming services can be found HERE.
