Anna Yates TK-5 August Newsletter

I am very excited to meet our new and returning Anna Yates TK-5th Grade Students and Families!

My name is Lery (pronounced like Leddy) Chavez. I am bilingual with native fluency in Spanish and English. I grew up in Mexico and in the United States; moving from Guadalajara to Cancun to Sacramento. I moved to the Bay Area to attend graduate school at UC Berkeley where I got my teaching credential and M.A. in Education.

Growing up in monocultural and multicultural environments, I have learned that I am happiest in ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse communities. I love the diversity of the Bay Area as well as the historical and present-day contributions its residents have made locally and globally.

My vision is to work in partnership with families, teachers, staff, and community members so that our school is a place of joy where students feel physically and emotionally safe; build positive relationships with other children and all adults; develop communication and collaboration skills; and have the support they need to meet high expectations because Lions Lead and Succeed!

Our orientation for transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and new students will be on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 from 4-5 PM. The orientation will begin with a presentation by the Principal in the Science Center at 4 PM. We will have school tours and meet-and-greet with some of our teachers after the presentation.

We are excited to welcome our new and returning students on Thursday, August 22, 2024! It´s going to be a great year because Lions Lead and Succeed!

School starts at 8:30 AM, and students can eat breakfast at school from 8:00-8:30 AM in the cafeteria. Although breakfast starts at 8:00 AM, we have supervision in the cafeteria starting at 7:30 AM for families who need to drop their students off early. If a student needs access to breakfast after the bell has rung, the cafeteria will be open until 9:00 AM daily.

School ends at 3:00 PM every day except for Wednesdays for students in grades 1 to 5. School ends at 1:30 PM for all students on Wednesdays. School ends at 1:30 PM everyday for TK and Kindergarten. You can find our bell schedule here.

Students who are enrolled in the after school program with The Rec (which offers academic support, enrichment, and snack) will participate until 6 PM unless they are picked up earlier. At Anna Yates TK-8 students wear uniforms. Students wear while, navy blue, or light blue solid color tops and navy blue or khaki solid color bottoms. Please note that black is not a uniform color and that students may not wear denim (like jeans) to school. Students must wear closed-toe and closed-heel shoes for safety. Students may wear baseball hats outdoors for sun protection but baseball hats are not allowed indoors.

On the last Friday of the month, students have a Free Dress Day or Uniform-Optional Day. Students must wear school-appropriate attire. Classes may earn bonus free dress days as a class Lion´s Loot reward. If earned, the class will get an e-mail notifying the parents of the designated Friday the students will have their bonus Free Dress Day.

Back to School Night is an important night to meet your child/children´s teacher, see their classroom, hear about what they will be learning this year, ask questions, and find opportunities to get involved at the school!

Anna Yates TK-8th Grade Back To School Night will be on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 from 5-6 PM for students in grades TK-5th and 5:30-6:30 PM for students in grades 6-8th.
