TONIGHT@6 Anti-Asian Racism Event
Massachusetts Town Hall on Anti-Asian Racism
Dear IP Community Members:
I wanted to bring TONIGHT’S 6PM Asian American Town Hall Meeting on Anti-Asian Racism to your attention, in case you would like to attend via Zoom. This community event will convene members of the Asian American community in Massachusetts. Registration information is included at the bottom of this message. I apologize for sending this with such short notice.
I would also like to acknowledge that the current surge in anti-Asian discrimination and hate incidents is a matter of great concern to our community. IP does not typically comment on events in the news, but xenophobia and bias-related violence threaten the safety of our families and undermine the sense of belonging we strive so hard to instill in our children.
For many in our community, it feels like a heavy load to carry. Recently, stories have come to light about Filipino victims of violent acts of racism directed toward Asian and Asian Americans. I've heard from community members who were saddened and angered, but not surprised, by last week's shooting in Georgia. We have seen an increase in acts of anti-Asian hate here in Massachusetts, too. Elders speak of being hesitant to walk alone. Parents are anxious about letting their children go out to play.
Please know that there will be more to come from IP on these issues. We are working to convene a community meeting of our own in the coming weeks to check in with parents and explore ways we can be supportive to each other as a community. In addition, we will be sharing anti-bias resources for parents in upcoming newsletters and on private IP Facebook Group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/ipbahay We hope you, too, will share resources that you have found helpful, especially for talking with and supporting children as they try to make sense of anti-Asian hate.
I hope you can join tonight's town hall meeting.
Sincerely,
Myra
