News
Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
Dear Churchill County School District Families,
I want to thank those of you that participated in the District Parent and Family Engagement Meeting that occurred on October 3. There is great benefit to our children when families are engaged with the school community. If you are able to, I encourage you to talk with your childβs school about opportunities to volunteer.
Last week you received a message from ChurchillCSD regarding the Federal Impact Aid Survey.
I wanted to personally reach out to our families to request your participation in the Federal Impact Aid Survey, which can be found by logging into Infinite Campus in the Message Center.
If you do not have an Infinite Campus Parent Portal or are having difficulty accessing your Infinite Campus account, please contact your childβs school office staff.
This vital program helps support school districts, like ours, that experience a loss in tax revenues due to the federal presence in our area. Each year, our district receives between $320,000 and $350,000 from these funds, which are essential for hiring educational staff, purchasing necessary supplies, funding transportation, and more.
The survey will be open for responses until November 15, 2024.
If you have any questions or need assistance completing the survey online, please donβt hesitate to reach out via email to Carissa Parsons at parsonsc@churchillcsd.com.
We appreciate the partnership we have with you in educating our children. The strength of our partnership with you directly affects the impact of education on our students!
Thanks for all that you do!
Derild Parsons

Message from our Partners at Care Solace π
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. As a school community, we want to encourage everyone to stay informed about the signs of bullying, the impact it can have, and what to do if you see it happening.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines bullying as behavior that is:
- Unwanted: The behavior is not wanted by the victim.
- Aggressive: The behavior involves some form of aggression, such as physical force, threats, or intimidation.
- Repeated: The behavior happens more than once or has the potential to happen again.
Acts of bullying may involve physical contact, words or gestures, or social exclusion. Bullying can happen in person or online.
The signs of bullying include:
- Physical signs: bruises, cuts, torn clothing, missing items
- Emotional signs: changes in mood, withdrawal from friends and activities, anxiety, depression
- Behavioral signs: aggressive behavior, changes in eating or sleeping habits, truancy
- Social signs: being excluded from activities, being made fun of or called names
If you see bullying happening, it's important to do something. Here are some things you can do:
- Talk to the bully and tell them to stop.
- Talk to the victim and offer your support.
- Report the bullying to a trusted adult, such as a teacher, counselor, or parent.
If you or someone you know is being bullied, there are resources available to help:
Together, we can create a safe and supportive school community for all students!
Care Solace is available 24/7/365 to connect individuals to care. Call 888-515-0595 or visit www.caresolace.com/churchillcsd.
IMPORTANT Health Services Information
RESPIRATORY ILLNESS
With the beginning of a new school year, and the close contact we have with one another, brings respiratory illnesses; Influenza (Flu), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.
Symptoms of all three are very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish between these illnesses. Therefore, if you think your child may have one of these respiratory illnesses, please get them tested by a healthcare provider so we can prevent the spread in our schools and community.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Students suspected of having a communicable disease may be temporarily excluded from school until an appropriate medical authority determines that the student is not a health or safety threat to other students or staff members. Written documentation may be required from a medical care provider if determined by the school nurse.
Students will be excluded for any of the following conditions:
Fever 100.4 degrees F or higher
Signs or symptoms of possible severe respiratory illnesses (Flu, COVID, RSV)
Diarrhea, defined as having more than 6 loose stools in a 24-hour period, or 3 in a 7 1/2 hour school day.
Vomiting
Mouth or nose sores (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Rash
Suspicious skin lesions (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Unusual color of skin, eyes, stool, or urine
Exclusion may also occur for the mildly ill child if the child is unable to participate in normal activities or if the child needs more care than can be provided by school health staff.
LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.
Attendance Reminder for Families β
As we approach the "giving" season, we want to encourage our families to review the health information provided above from our Chief School Nurse. Additionally, we'd like to emphasize our attendance policies and procedures.
ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
EXCUSED does not equal EXEMPT! (State Law NRS 392.130)
Please note that any absence not excused by a medical/mental health professional or a school administrator will be counted against the student's attendance as per Nevada state attendance law.
Any absence that goes unreported by the parent will default to a truancy after three days.
Excused = NOT EXEMPT (counted against student's attendance).
Exempt = Medical Professional note provided or School Admin Excused (not counted against student attendance).
Notification: Schools may notify families of any concerning patterns associated with excessive absences; including but not limited to notes home, School Attendance Review Board (SARB) warnings, pre-SARB notices, and SARB attendance contracts.

π Migrant Education Program Newsletter
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) offers technical assistance and financial support to enhance educational opportunities and academic success for migrant children, youth, agricultural workers, fishers, and their families. Its primary goal is to ensure that migrant children receive the same free public education as other children. MEP funds, which are federal, support high-quality education programs for migratory children aged 3 to 21. These funds help prevent penalties due to disparities in curriculum, graduation requirements, or academic standards as children move between states or within a state. Additionally, MEP ensures that migratory children have full and fair opportunities to meet the same challenging state academic standards expected of all students.

Newly elected 5th grade Student Council members are off to an impressive start. Last week, they visited all 4th and 5th grade classes to promote Nevada's Week of Respect through engaging activities that emphasized the importance of a positive school environment. The Student Council students presented word scramble posters featuring uplifting affirmation statements, encouraging their peers to work together to unscramble the words.
ππΆ E.C. Best Elementary School
Last week, students in Monica Mayfield's third grade class completed their Wonder Stories, tackling questions that sparked their imagination and understanding. From asking why they have hair and nails to unraveling the process of how broken bones heal, students learned how to cite text evidence to support their answers. In addition to exploring scientific wonders, the students sharpened their math skills by mastering four different strategies for solving multiplication problems.
ππΊ Lahontan Elementary School
Students in Jenny Youngβs first grade class worked on life science concepts and learned about the life cycle of plants. They participated in hands-on activities that deepened their understanding of how plants thrive in their environments. The unit began with an investigation of a sunflower head. Students examined the structures and patterns that make sunflowers so unique. Following their exploration, they tasted sunflower seeds. Students then got to show off their creativity and crafted cheerful sunflower pictures, showcasing their artistic talents while reinforcing their learning.
ππ» Northside Early Learning Center
Dr. Tom and Melissa McCormick made a generous donation of books to Janeen Malkovich's reading program for students in her four-year-old classroom. Melissa McCormick came into the classroom to distribute the books and read to the class.
