Principal's Message - Mrs. Christian

Dear Garcia Families,

Welcome to the warmest February I can remember! Our students are definitely enjoying the warmer temperatures for recess.

This month brings several fun and exciting learning opportunities and activities for our Gator family. We will celebrate Kindness Month, Black History Month, and Read Across America Week. We will join with the district in the Read, Lead, Succeed Challenge, where community supporters and district staff will join campus staff and students to compete for the most amount of minutes reading each week! The challenge begins February 9th, and teachers will be sharing more information with students next week. The Gators want to win, so help us read, read, read!

As you can see, many activities this month revolve around reading - one of Mrs. Christian's favorite things to do! I taught reading for many years, and my very favorite thing to do was read to my students every, single day (even my big 5th graders!). Reading is the way we connect as human beings. Reading in my classroom built strong relationships, not only between me and my students, but also between themselves. Reading to my three grown sons when they were little, created bonds that will last forever, regardless of the many parenting mistakes I made along the way. Furthermore, research shows us just how important reading is for brain development. Studies done by pediatricians show a deep connection between reading and brain development. Brain scans show that 80% of children have increases in specific areas of the brain when they are reading or are read to daily.

So, jump in and join with us this month in celebrating reading and helping your children, our students, grow!

¡Bienvenidos al febrero más cálido que puedo recordar! Nuestros estudiantes definitivamente están disfrutando de las temperaturas más cálidas durante el recreo.

Este mes trae varias oportunidades y actividades de aprendizaje divertidas y emocionantes para nuestra familia Gator. Celebraremos el Mes de la Bondad, el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana y la Semana de la Lectura en todo Estados Unidos. ¡Nos uniremos al distrito en el Desafío Leer, Liderar, Triunfar, donde los partidarios de la comunidad y el personal del distrito se unirán al personal del campus y a los estudiantes para competir por la mayor cantidad de minutos de lectura cada semana! El desafío comienza el 9 de febrero y los maestros compartirán más información con los estudiantes la próxima semana. Los Gators quieren ganar, ¡así que ayúdanos a leer, leer, leer!

Como pueden ver, hay muchas actividades en este mes que giran a la lectura: ¡una de las actividades favoritas de la Sra. Christian! Enseñé lectura durante muchos años, y lo que más me gustaba hacer era leerles a mis alumnos todos los días (¡incluso a mis grandes alumnos de quinto grado!). La lectura es la forma en que nos conectamos como seres humanos. La lectura en mi salón de clases construyó relaciones sólidas, no solo entre mis alumnos y yo, sino también entre ellos mismos. Leerles a mis tres hijos mayores cuando eran pequeños creó vínculos que durarán para siempre, independientemente de los muchos errores de crianza que cometí a lo largo del camino. Además, las investigaciones nos muestran cuán importante es la lectura para el desarrollo del cerebro. Los estudios realizados por pediatras muestran una profunda conexión entre la lectura y el desarrollo del cerebro. Los escáneres cerebrales muestran que el 80% de los niños tienen aumentos en áreas específicas del cerebro cuando leen o les leen a diario.

IMPORTANT DECEMBER DATES

Middle School Band tryout dates and times are below:

Feb 12th – Lamar – 5:00-7:00 pm

Feb 13th – Travis – 5:00-7:00 pm

Feb 15th – Bonham – 5:00-7:00 pm

The reading challenge will run February 9th through March 8th. This four-week event will give students the opportunity to read and compete for prizes. Every Friday (starting February 16th), the prize patrol will be coming around to award prizes to elementary, middle, and high school students. This plan is very similar to the reading program this past summer except this time, we’re engaging community members for participation and financial support.
