MESSAGE FROM MS LINDA
Tēnā koutou katoa. Nau mai ki te whānau o te Ōrātia. Malo e lelei. Zdravo. Talofa lava. Kia orana. Ni hao. Namaste. Kamusta. Greetings Ōrātia whānau.
This week our Tuakana students and teachers are away at Camp Bentzon on Kawau Island. They travelled by bus up to Sandspit and then took the ferry across to the island. This Monday they left in fine rain so I am very thankful that the weather has dried up a bit since then. Three of our classes go Monday to Wednesday and the other three classes go Wednesday to Friday. Our two deputy principals Mrs Goldsmith and Mr Moncur have shared their time at camp, and I took a trip up there on Thursday to visit.
I have fond memories of boating and fishing around Kawau as a teenager, as friends of ours owned a yacht and took me sailing with them. So I just love getting out on the harbour and enjoying the sea air. Camp Bentzon is such a magical place, and our students get the opportunity to do all sorts of exciting activities that many would not be able to experience otherwise. There is a lot of care and thoughtful planning that goes into making camp work, and I thank the parents who have taken time out from their regular lives to attend each camp. I know that there were many other parents who would have liked to have gone too, and apologise if you missed out.
Mrs Goldsmith and Mrs Lewis have worked very hard for many months to plan this camp, and I thank them and the other teachers too for all their mahi. Although the cost of camp keeps rising, it is such a worthwhile experience for our students, and we do make the provision on Kindo of parents being able to pay the costs off over the course of the year. Please talk to Michelle in the office if this is something that would help your family budget out.
While the senior students were away, the rest of the school took advantage of the senior courts being more free, and had a Wheels Day on Tuesday. It is always great to see the fun our students have wheeling around on their bikes, scooters, roller blades and skateboards etc.
An update from the Ministry of Education on the hall refurbishment means that our original timeframe of a July start for the hall project has been pushed back to the October holidays. While the delay is frustrating, it is also fortunate that we will continue to have the use of our school hall during the colder, wetter months of winter. As the hall will now be available throughout Term 2 and Term 3 we have decided that the Talent Show will now go ahead in Term 3. Please see below for further information around this.
Take care and stay safe.
Kia kaha, kia atawhai.
Ngā mihi nui, Ms Linda
CAMP BENTZON - CAMP 1
Some early photos of Camp Bentzon received this afternoon as Camp 1 made their way home. Good luck for Camp 2 who left this morning. It looks amazing ! We'll post more photos in next week's Newsletter.
TRAVELWISE LEADERS
Recently the Travelwise Leaders did a speed gun activity. We wanted to do this activity so we could analyse the different vehicle speeds around the school. There were different interesting speeds because of how the speeds accelerated and decreased. We sourced a location on Shaw Road near the speed limit change zone then started. We had a professional come with us; Caragh from Auckland Transport. We had different roles like: holding the sign, using the speed gun and recording data. When analysing we figured out that only 6.13 percent were speeding. The highest speed we found out was 55 km per hour, moving from the 60km/h zone to the 40km/h zone. Now we will repeat this same activity again at the end of Term 2 or the start of Term 3 after some initiatives to encourage motorists to reduce their speed. Then we will compare the two charts and observe if there are any differences.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
The Ministry of Education has published new guidelines that clarify expectations for student attendance. As you may be aware, regular attendance for students of more than 90% each week, is an important goal for schools to achieve, based on government expectations. At the moment our school has 61% of our students achieving 90% attendance each week. We would like to lift that to 70% or more. Please follow the link to see what the Ministry of Education has to say to help parents have a better understanding of how they can assist us in making this happen.

Also a reminder that if your child is absent for any reason we have two ways to report this. The Report an Absence form on the front page of our school website or you can phone 818-6216 and leave a phone message via our Report an Absence option.
SCIENCE IN ROOM 3
Room 3 got some hands on learning this week with "mice" and "telephones" as part of their Science module. The "mice" introduces the students to coding and the "telephones" were part of their communication education.
VOLUNTEER READING LISTENERS
Do you live listening and guiding young readers? We are looking for whanau/parents/grandparents who have great ears and have some spare time to listen to our tamariki read. Oratia School have several volunteer listeners this year but we would love to have some more. If that sounds like something you or someone you know could be interested in and you are available to attend for an hour block each week (same day and same time). Please contact kathrynm@oratia.school.nz or leave a message at the office.
WEAR YOUR PINK WITH PRIDE
Tomorrow Friday 17 May is Pink Shirt Day so get your best pink outfit on and come on in with a gold coin donation for a good cause. By taking part in Pink Shirt Day 2024 you will be doing your part to eliminate bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusion.
WHEELS DAY SKATER BOYS
WINTER CLOTHING
As we head into winter, the wet and muddy season, it's a good time to remind parents to pack a change of clothes in your child's bag every day. If a child gets wet and can change into their own clothes it makes things a lot easier. A raincoat is also an essential item for those that walk to school. Please make sure any clothing is named so it can be returned to its owner if it gets lost. We are also looking for donations of girls trousers/leggings and new girls underwear (sizes small to large) to have on hand as a back up. Please drop these in to Deb in the school office.
NEW ENROLMENTS
If you are in zone and have a child starting school this year or next year and you have not yet contacted the school office, please email Deb at deborahd@oratia.school.nz We do not issue enrolment forms until 2-3 months prior to enrolment but we will take their details which will assist us with our planning. Thank you.
