Growing Together @ STL

Leadership Message
On Monday October 8, STL's School Council engaged in rich discussion to set forth their budget and align their priorities with what is best for student learning. Thank so much for the rich conversations, great feedback, and for your continued support for all those connected to our St. Luke Catholic School community. We are blessed to have so many families engaged in our fantastic school!
While many of our students were on a field trip this Friday, our 1&2 and 7&8 classes were at school, and it was fantastic to witness a beautiful mentorship and play opportunity emerge. The grade 1&2s invited the leaders in the building to play on the park, challenging our Junior Highs to be the best versions of themselves they could be. And they rose to the challenge! I saw and heard JH kids inviting the littlest learners join a game, and accommodating to include them well. There were lots of smiles and laughter! Well done, JH! I could not be more proud of you they stepped into this mentorship opportunity with respect and kind play!
Outdoor Free Play has so many mental, emotional, physical, social and cognitive health benefits! All children, big and small, benefit from being outside and having unstructured play! Playing outside is sacred time - and whenever possible, we will be outside!
Let's head into the long weekend with a little laughter!
What's worse than finding a worm in your apple?
Finding half a worm in your apple! 🤣🤣🤣
Happy Thanksgiving! May your long weekend reveal many opportunities to be grateful!
With continued gratitude,
Mme Gravelle

Why is the weekly newsletter structured this way?
Last year, students, staff and parents spent time establishing goals and objectives for St. Luke Catholic School in the form of a School Assurance Plan. The Assurance plan has 4 different areas (we call them pillars).
- Faith Formation
- Learners & Learning
- Systemic Wellness
- Community Engagement
Our newsletter is a testament to the great work occurring in each pillar. It is the evidence as we achieve the goals outlined in each of the 4 pillars on our St. Luke Catholic School's 2024-2025 Assurance Plan (linked here for your convenience).
In 2025 we will begin the process of building our 2025-2026 Assurance Plan and your voice will be part of the process to determine St. Luke Catholic School's educational priorities! Stay tuned!

It's Show Time!
Mrs. Kroeker's, Miss Diduck's and Mrs. Winnick's classes took in some theatre time on Friday and watched "Wild Robot." They read the book last year, and were able to see it on the big screen this year! A fantastic circle-back learning experience!
READ IN WEEK @ STL 📚📘
Our school had so many generous visitors this week to read to us! We had parents, the Crusaders, a police officer, a Strathcona County Counsellor, our Member of Parliament and so many more come to share a love of literacy and read to all of our wonderful students! What a great week of reading!!
A special thank you to Mrs. Scoggins for all your hard work coordinating our guest readers!
What wafted from the cafeteria was decadent!
Thanks to our Grade 5&6 students who made double chocolate cookies in the cafeteria today! The smell throughout the school made everyone's mouths water!
Great life skill learning!

Collecting Information to Assess Student Learning
Teachers gather information from three main sources to plan next steps in their teaching to ensure success for all students. These three sources also provide evidence to determine when a student achieves a goal or objective. Information gathered from assessments also help students determine where they are on their learning journey. These three assessment sources drive the formal assessment tools used to communicate learning to parents through Evidence of Learning and Report Cards.

What do we do when it's Cold Outside?
Our EICS Administrative Procedure 134 outlines that all children are outside for regular recess times to -25c temperature or Windchill. This year we are introducing Polar Bear Recess for those days when we may be colder than -25 because outdoor fresh air play is vital to children's optimal learning and health. Stay tuned for more details about our exciting Polar Bear Recesses!
Colder months are on the way....
If you or someone you know is in need of winter wear, please reach out to Mrs. Bilyk or Mme Gravelle in the office. We are delighted to help.
Laughing Together is Healthy!
A thanksgiving joke from one of our grade 5&6 students!
Why did the turkey have a stomach ache?
Because he goggled everything up until he was stuffed!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Access52 is coming to St. Luke and hosting a parent event!!!! What is Access52?
Christmas in the Country
Together with St. Luke Catholic School, the St. Luke School Council and Parent Association is thrilled to once again be a participating venue in Strathcona County's annual Christmas in the Country event! This event enables our school council to provide student enrichment and volunteer opportunities within our school community.
This year, we are offering students the opportunity to be their own boss with the addition of our Young Entrepreneurs Maker Market! Located in the foyer and main hallway, spaces will be $10.00 each and vendors will be responsible for bringing their own table (no more than 6 feet long). Chairs will be provided.
Below is a link to the Google Form application to be filled out if you are interested in joining us this year, either in the main market or the Young Entrepreneurs Maker Market. Our main market is nearly full so don’t hesitate to get your form filled out! Young entrepreneur registration should be filled out by a parent or guardian using the parent or guardian’s contact information. Included in the form is the St. Luke Parent Association Treasurer's email for e-transfer payments.

Christmas in the Country takes place December 7, 2024 from 10:00am to 4:00pm (doors open to vendors at 8:00am)
Please note: Young entrepreneurs that have previously participated in Christmas in the Country are eligible to have a table in the cafeteria or gym. Those spaces remain $25.00.
If you have any questions regarding Christmas in the Country or our new Young Entrepreneurs Maker Market, please contact us at stlukeCITC@gmail.com
We are so excited to host this wonderful community event and look forward to welcoming you all on December 7, 2024.

Strathcona County Library Survery
It’s time for Strathcona County Library to create a new service plan to ensure that they’re meeting the current needs in our community.
Part of the process is a survey, hosted on County Voice. The library hopes to hear from a broad cross-section of Strathcona County residents, including school-age children and their parents:
What draws you to the library?
What might be missing?
How can the library make their services more welcoming & accessible for everyone?
The input gathered will shape services and help the library plan for the future.
Take the 5-minute survey on County Voice, open until Sunday, Oct. 20.
