Dear Parents/Carers,
This week, the children have been fascinated by our learning all about D-Day. They have watched various news clips/video clips to support their understanding and this has led them to ask extremely mature questions regarding this very important subject area. We are in the process of creating a whole school display to share some of our work. Photographs will be sent on next weeks Newsletter and shared via X .
On Thursday, some Year 5 pupils attended a D-Day event at Junction 32 in Castleford with various other schools. They had a wonderful time seeing wartime vehicles, soldiers and listening to a local choir. There was much excitement over being able to hold a can of powdered egg preserved from the war and learning how flour is made. What a fantastic experience.
This Week
On Tuesday, our Year 6 pupils had a great day at York University. It is extremely important for our pupils to begin to think about the next phases of their education and having the opportunity to experience looking round a University helps to open minds to all possibilities. As part of the visit, the pupils sat in a lecture theatre and attended a session about coding. They then completed an activity to decipher a code using the Caesar Cipher alphabet.
On Wednesday, Year 5 had the opportunity to walk to Pontefract Castle and complete some sketches of the Castle Keep and other features. We have some amazing artists in Year 5 and they have produced some excellent work.
Both Year 3 and 4 visited Pontefract Library this week which is always a wonderful experience. The pupils were able to look at the different sections within the library and see other facilities they can access. As part of the visit the librarian challenged the pupils to sort a pile of books into alphabetical order. Every Summer, the library set a reading challenge. More information will be shared with parents in the next few weeks.
A few Memorable Moments
I had the pleasure of teaching Geography in Year 5 this week. We started to look at Rivers; building upon the previous work we have done on Mountains. The pupils were very knowledgeable and worked very hard producing high quality sketches of the different parts of a river. Well done Year 5.
I was absolutely blown away by the artwork of a pupil in Early Years this week. Whilst in outdoor provision, the pupils were challenged to create an observational watercolour painting of some flowers. Molly created a wonderful painting demonstrating not only a real talent for art, but also great independence and resilience. Well done Molly!
