Aviator Updates
SY24 CWFDES Family Issue #35
A WEEK: May 20-24
Greetings Aviator Families,
We are thrilled to announce that renowned author Don Tate will be visiting our school on Wednesday, May 22nd. Mr. Tate is a celebrated author and illustrator known for his inspiring books that engage young readers and encourage a love for literature.
During his visit, Mr. Tate will share insights into his creative process, read from his acclaimed works, and inspire our students with his passion for storytelling. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect with a real-life author and illustrator, and we are excited to welcome him to our school community.
I'd like to thank Ms. Owen, our wonderful media specialist, for coordinating this event and our fantastic PTA for splitting the bill with us!
We look forward to an engaging and enriching experience for all our students.

News from our PTA
General Membership and General Election Information
The spring Duke PTA General Membership meeting will take place on Monday, May 20th, at 5pm, during which elections for a new Executive Board will be held. The PTA needs parents/guardians who want to take an active role within our school community to fill these board positions. The Duke PTA is
an important part of our school community, providing funds and hosting activities to support and enrich the educational experience of all students and staff at Duke Elementary. None of which is possible without the help and involvement from parents/guardians of Duke students. Very few have express interest in joining the board, and as such, all the support programs and fun activities are at risk of not being able to continue.
Below you will find a brief description of the executive board positions for the Duke PTA. A board term lasts 2 years, and the bolded positions must be filled to comply with state PTA rules. If you have any questions or are interested in running for a position, please email us at cwfdespta@gmail.com and plan to attend the general membership meeting tomorrow, Monday 5/20 at 5PM. Even if you are unable to take on a board position, there are many ways you can still help the Duke PTA and we hope you will attend the meeting to find out how.
- President: Presides over all PTA meetings; coordinates work with board members and planning committees; reviews financial documents; communicates with National and State PTA organizations. This is a must fill position.
- 1st Vice President – Fundraising: Aides President; stands in for President when needed; liaison for fundraising events; coordinates with any fundraising event committees.
- 2nd Vice President – Committee Liaison: Aides President; stands in for President when needed; liaison for committees; coordinates with all non-fundraising committees.
- Treasurer: Maintains PTA funds; maintains bank statements, receipts, and expenditure records; makes disbursements; presents financial statements; submits tax forms. This is a must fill position.
- Recording Secretary: Records and reads meeting minutes; files records; maintains current bylaws. This is a must fill position.
- Corresponding Secretary: maintains current membership list; maintains email account and Facebook page; coordinates website information.
- Delegate: attends executive board meetings; potentially attends local PTA Council meetings (currently there is no local council).
Please see that attached document (linked below) for additional information regarding additional PTA officer's duties.
We hope to see you tomorrow at 5. Light refreshments and childcare will be provided.

Above Par Golf and Entertainment
Above Par Golf and Entertainment wants our kids to SOAR and they want to reward them for doing so! Your family can trade in SOAR tickets for FREE time on their virtual simulators. For every 10 SOAR tickets your child collects, Above Par will give your family 30 minutes of free simulator rental time. They've asked they we limit each visit to a max of 20 SOAR tickets per family, but that's a whole hour of fun for the family, just for your kid SOAR'ing high! Above Par offers much more than golf and they are located right here in Leonardtown. Check their website (www.abovepar.golf) to plan your visit!"
