Teacher Apprenticeship Signing Day
The district recently held a signing ceremony honoring three juniors who each signed Letters of Intent to serve as Teacher Apprentices in Washington Community Schools.
This has been a collaborative effort between Washington High School, Regional Opportunity Initiatives, and Vincennes University. Jorgia Fishel, Addyson Cummins, and Breah Eskew will each serve as paid Teacher Apprentices for the rest of their high school careers. Apprentices will gain classroom and teaching experience and mentorship from our qualified staff. Apprentices will also participate in professional development and work toward industry certifications.
Successful completion of VU's Teacher Apprentice Two-Year Certificate while still in high school will allow them to earn 18 dual credits and graduate from VU with their bachelor’s degree in education sooner. This represents the first Teacher Apprentice signing in the 11-county region with ROI's Upskill Program.

WCS Awarded Robotics Competition Grant
Washington Community Schools is proud to announce the district is one of 137 recipients of the 2024-2025 K-12 Robotics Competition Grant from the Indiana Department of Education. This competitive grant opportunity supports schools and other eligible entities in providing opportunities to increase interest and improve STEM skills through participation in competitive robotics programs.
Awarded through funds appropriated by the Indiana General Assembly, this grant aligns with the mission of Indiana’s Priorities for STEM Education to provide Indiana students with engaging STEM learning experiences that prepare them for emerging careers and educational opportunities.
“WCS has been dedicated to improving the rigor and accessibility of high-quality STEM programming such as Robotics,” said Assistant Superintendent Steve Peterson. “I couldn’t be more excited for our students and staff as this $79,100.00 grant will allow us to expand the robotics opportunities throughout K-12 by adding more teams while freeing up other funds that we can use towards upgrading our STEM Labs.”
“This grant allows us to continue our district-wide robotics program which is huge for our students,” said Patty Allen, Technology Integration Specialist at WCS. “We are thankful for this support and excited to see all the amazing things our students do this year!”
Coding with Colors at Washington Veale Elementary
Students at Washington Veale Elementary coded trick-or-treat maps for their robot to follow!
Students have been learning about coding using Ozobots. Students code Ozobots to follow different paths or complete tasks by drawing lines and color patterns.
PLTW Science of Technology at Washington Jr. High
Students in Mr. Williams’ Science of Technology classes finished a unit in Physics and Engineering where they learned about potential and kinetic energy.
They built foam track roller coasters to take measurements and then calculated the potential and kinetic energy using formulas. The final project had students explore energy transfer in a marble run challenge with specific criteria to construct their device. Students were able to learn concepts while having fun at the same time.
