Helpful Tips to Get You Through This Month:
Parents, here are some helpful tips for the upcoming month:
Prioritize attendance early
Your help in making sure your child attends school is so important. Children who don't attend school regularly fall behind and score lower on tests. They can have a hard time making and keeping friends. And frequent absences in can set a pattern that makes a child more likely to drop out of school later. Emphasize the importance of attendance with your child. Don't allow absences for reasons other than illness or emergency. And if your child regularly resists attending, talk to the teacher or school counselor.
Promote safety online with a contract
To keep children safe, adults tell them not to talk to strangers. But talking to strangers is a big part of being online these days. To emphasize the need to be safe, draw up a contract with your teen. It should outline acceptable recreational online activities and the time limits for each. Your teen should also agree never to give out personal information or post anything that wouldn't be OK for the whole world to see. And your student should promise never to meet people only known online without you being present.
Create a structure your teen can rely on
The start of a school year is a new beginning for all students. To offer support during this time, help your teen establish routines and habits to rely on. Work with your student to schedule the time needed to fulfill responsibilities, including a regular study time. Encourage your student to keep track of grades and to ask teachers for help right away if subjects are a struggle or your teen is falling behind. At home, establish screen-free times and encourage conversation and creative thinking.
