A Message from Marcie
Dear Families,
Despite last night’s snowy weather, which led to the cancellation of our 2nd and 4th grade concerts and all after-school activities, we were so happy to be together at school today—especially for our Valentine’s Day celebrations this afternoon!
A huge thank you to all of our parent volunteers who brought creativity and fun to make the day extra special for our students.
Just a quick reminder about our upcoming schedule:
- Friday, Feb. 14 – No school for students (Institute Day for teachers)
- Monday, Feb. 17 – No school in honor of Presidents’ Day
Rescheduled 2nd & 4th Grade Concerts:
We are happy to share that our 2nd and 4th grade concerts have been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19.
- 2nd Grade: 5:00 PM (students arrive at 4:45 PM)
- 4th Grade: 6:00 PM (students arrive at 5:45 PM)
Enjoy the long weekend, and we’ll see everyone back on Tuesday!
Best,
Marcie
Introducing the CIC & Parent Focus Group Opportunity
District 109 is excited to participate in the Consortium for Interdistrict Collaboration (CIC), a partnership with neighboring North Shore districts focused on enhancing instructional practices. Modeled after the successful Tri-State Consortium in New York, the CIC promotes continuous improvement through peer reviews and collaboration.
As part of this process, we’re seeking parent volunteers to participate in a focus group during the CIC’s site visit on Wednesday, March 12th from 1:50-2:25. If you're interested, please reach our directly to Dr. Faust to express your interest ASAP.
Thank you for your support!
Read-a-thon Wrap-up
This year’s Read-a-thon was a great success! This week, students received prize coupons and we began celebrating their accomplishments! Students have started claiming their free books, and we held the first of two BreakoutEDU parties and our first-ever Random Raffle. Next week the rest of the rewards will occur. Congratulations to the classes who read the most: Ms. Mason’s class and Ms. Ferguson’s class, and the class that raised the most funds: Mrs. McCormick’s class!
A Note for All School Volunteers (2nd Posting)
We are incredibly grateful for the time, care, and dedication our volunteers bring to our school community. Your generosity enriches the experiences of our students and supports our staff in countless meaningful ways. Whether you're helping in the lunchroom, library, assisting with events, or providing behind-the-scenes support, your efforts make a lasting difference.
We’ve recently noticed instances where volunteers have contacted another child's parent directly about incidents they observed at school, such as illness, injury, or behavioral concerns. While this may seem helpful, we respectfully ask that you refrain from doing so.
Reaching out to parents in this way can compromise student privacy and may result in miscommunication or delays in families receiving accurate information. To ensure all concerns are handled appropriately, please report any observations to the school administration, who will follow the proper steps to address the situation.
We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain clear, respectful communication practices.
Conference Sign-Ups are Coming (2nd Posting)
Mark your calendars! Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, March 20 from 1:00-4:00 pm & 5:00-8:00 pm and on Friday, March 21 from 8:30-11:30 am. All DPS109 schools will hold in-person parent-teacher conferences this year with an option to Zoom for parents/guardians who are not available for an in-person conference. Parents will sign up for a conference using Sign-Up Genius. We will share links for all teacher sign-up forms on Thursday, February 20, at 12:00 pm (noon).
It is best practice to hold one parent conference per child, to ensure that both parents receive the same information regarding their child’s strengths and needs. Therefore, we ask that parents sign up for one joint conference per student. If this is a concern, please reach out to Dr. Faust directly. We look forward to seeing all of our parents during conferences. Conferences are a discussion between parents and teachers. At this time elementary conferences do not include students and therefore we ask that children not attend the parent-teacher conference.
Parker's Picks
Looking for the best books for your young reader? Over the next few weeks, Parker will share his favorite books for little penguins of each age group. This week, Parker’s favorite reads for kindergartners! Some of these are great read-alouds, while others are perfect for kindergarteners to practice reading on their own.
Why Not You? An inspiring story that encourages young readers to go after their dreams no matter how ambitious they may seem! An affirming tale to uplift self-esteem, and empower imaginations.
The Year We Learned to Fly Kindergarten is a year of ups and downs and tremendous learning. In this magical book, Jacqueline Woodson lyrically uplifts young readers and shows them the heights they can reach through the power of resilience. With brilliant illustrations and a message to match, this story is sure to help kindergarteners recognize their value and inspire them to blossom beautifully.
Just Ask! Inspired by her own experience, United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor brings a tale that celebrates the beauty and value of our differences. Young readers will see that although it can be tough to recognize as a kid, there are great things that come from our different backgrounds and perspectives.
The Hat Trilogy, by Jon Klassen. In this simple, quirky set of picture books, the bear’s hat is gone, and he wants it back. A fish has stolen a hat; will he get away with it? Two turtles have found one hat, but the hat looks good on both of them. Read together to fully appreciate the dead-pan humor which gets funnier with every re-read.
Doggo and Pupper series In this adorable early reader series, an old dog learns new tricks, a young dog learns responsibility, and a clever cat goes along for the fun.

News From Early Learners
This month, Early Learners are celebrating Valentine’s Day with fun, themed crafts while continuing to explore Black History Month through biographies. Students created nesting dolls in the style of Vanessa Brantley-Newton and made hearts inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat. In math, they’ve been working with pattern blocks, identifying shapes, and learning their characteristics. Additionally, some classes are diving into literacy by using their knowledge of sounds to write simple words on whiteboards during whole group activities. It’s exciting to see the students gaining confidence as writers!
In Grady’s Group, we’ve been having a blast leading up to Valentine's Day! Last week, we wrinkled a heart with our scratchy words, and this week, we got creative by making heart-shaped crayons from old ones. The children helped melt and mold the crayons into new shapes, creating something special for Thursday! (Don’t spoil the surprise by showing the picture below!) We also enjoyed reading Pete the Cat: Valentine's Day is Cool by James and Kimberly Dean. It’s been a week full of love, learning, and fun!
A big thank you to all the volunteers who came to help at our Valentine’s Day party. Your support made the celebration even more special, and we’re grateful for your involvement in making these activities memorable for the children!
