May 2025 News to Know...
Indian Landing Elementary
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The trees are showing lots of green, the temperatures are starting to warm up and the sun is shining more often than not... the thrill of spring is definitely in the air! This is always a very exciting and busy time of the school year. By now, students are very familiar with the routines and expectations, and our classrooms are buzzing as students continue to work on growing and learning! Springtime also means lots of activities here at school. From the upcoming Spring Concert and Arts in Ed Night to the Red Wings game and our annual Fun Day we hope that you and your family will be able to spend some time at Indian Landing this season!
May 5th through 9th we will be celebrating Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week! This year's theme is Road Trip USA. Thanks to the generosity of our PTO, our IL teachers and staff will be surprised with special treats and activities throughout the week. If your child would like to share a postcard of appreciation, please feel free to print out a postcard using this template- Thank You postcard
The annual PTO Carnival is a favorite IL tradition that students and families look forward to each year! This year marks the 48th Carnival and it will take place on Friday, June 6th in the Indian Landing bus loop. An event of this magnitude also requires LOTS of volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering at our June 2024 Carnival, please sign up today!
As always, thank you for your ongoing support! We look forward to seeing you soon!
Sincerely,
Marcie Ware

Placement Process for 2025-2026 school year
Student placements are done by a team consisting of the principal, classroom teachers, and professional support staff. The Placement Team takes into account the academic, social, emotional, and learning environment needs of every student as we strive to create well-balanced classrooms. During the placement process, the team reviews a variety of data sources, as well as input from teachers, staff and parents. This information is then used to determine student placement.
All families should have received an electronic parent input form back in April. These forms are due on Monday, May 12th.
Mrs. Ware will review each form before the grade level placement meeting. All forms will be submitted electronically and go directly to the principal. In an effort to make sure no input is missed due to sheer volume, parents are asked to use the online form rather than sending an email. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Ware directly.
Asian American Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian American Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month—a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian-Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and Easter Island).
The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. During Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we are encouraged to explore the rich history and culture of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
Here at Indian Landing, we are learning and celebrating the rich culture of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders during morning announcements and through special books and read-alouds. If you would like to learn along with us family at home, please check out our morning announcement resource .
Jewish American Heritage Month
Jewish American Heritage Month was formally recognized in May 2006. Each May, people celebrate more than 350 years of Jewish contributions to American culture by learning about Jewish traditions, foods, and important Jewish-American figures such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Albert Einstein, Stan Lee, and Gloria Steinhem. At Indian Landing, we will be featuring special announcements highlighting the contributions of famous Jewish Americans.
To learn more about Jewish Americans who have made an impact in our world, check out this list of books that are perfect for reading together at home!
Friendly Reminders about Parent Pick-Up
Please remember that the entrance to our car pick-up line is on Forest Hills Road. All vehicles should enter the parking lot via Forest Hills and follow the big loop. Cars should not be entering from North Landing Road and cutting off those that are already in line. Thank you!
If you are a parent/guardian who uses the Walker Door at the library to pick up your child please remember that the Walker Door option is intended for families who choose to walk to the building for pick-up. Individuals should not be parking onsite and using the Walker Door.
PTO Update
The Indian Landing (IL) Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a partnership of parents, guardians, teachers, and administrators committed to supporting and enhancing the educational and social growth of all students at Indian Landing Elementary School.
Now that we are into the second half of the school year the PTO is hard at work planning fundraisers and several events such as the Ice Cream Social, Bingo Night, and our legendary IL Carnival. We are in need of volunteers and coordinators... please consider becoming involved!
We will also be holding elections for new officers at our June meeting. If you are interested in taking on a leadership role (no experience necessary... we will train you!), please feel free to email indianlandingpto@gmail.com.
Want to learn more? You are welcome to join us at our next meeting! Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 7 PM. Meetings alternate between in-person meeting and virtual. Please check out the PTO website for more information.

Be a Partner!
Our district's goals continue to focus on developing and supporting the whole student. Our approach to positive behavior support will emphasize the idea of Be a Partner! Students will learn specific expectations focused on these key concepts- Be Respectful. Be Responsible. Be Safe. Be Kind.
These ideas are a part of what we do each and every day, and our staff will continually be looking for ways to acknowledge students who are respectful, responsible, safe and kind. Students will receive Partner's Pride stickers as recognition from adults in the building and on the bus. Students who receive stickers will be eligible for random prizes such as bracelets and t-shirts. Once a month, we will be recognizing "Partners Proud Moments". Students selected for this honor can be selected by their teacher for any reason- a positive attitude, responsible behavior, overcoming a difficulty, or meeting a personal goal are just a few examples of reasons why a student may be selected for a Partner's Proud Moment. These students receive an Outstanding Student certificate, as well as a special star pin.
Congrats to our April Partner's Pride students!
