Staff Appreciation Month
We have six people retiring this year.
Dianna Badgett
Annette Bodey
Susan Mellen
Shannon Cloud
Mark Temple
Jodi Schiermeister
They have dedicated years of service, devotion, and commitment to our students! In their tireless work and while under their watch, our students have made positive and noticeable gains in the safety, importance, and academics of our students. Their legacy = they were a "champion" to our students, moving them towards realizing our goals and vision for every student!
You all share a similar narrative! In honor of this work, the Board and I read this resolution for all staff of SMSD!
WHEREAS, our country’s future depends upon providing quality education to all students; and
WHEREAS, teachers and staff build relationships with students that enable young people to believe in their own potential; and
WHEREAS, teachers and staff work long beyond the normal school day to instruct, transport, supervise, counsel, and feed the students; and
WHEREAS, teachers and staff care about their students and impart them with the skills they’ll need to thrive in adult life; and
WHEREAS, teachers and staff have adapted to different challenges to provide instruction while keeping students safe; and
WHEREAS, our community recognizes and supports its teachers and staff in transporting, feeding, supervising, counseling, and educating the children of this community.

Progress and Impact
Goal 1. Increase the academic achievement of all students. The goal is to see 60% or more of our students reach grade-level ability in Language Arts. The goal is to see 45% or more of our students reach grade-level ability in Math. The goal is to see 62% or more of our students reach grade-level ability in Science. So far, over 70% of our students show proficiency in their science courses. SMSD is on track to meet or exceed the goal.
Goal 2. Expand the college and career readiness of our students. The goal is to see a 90% - 100% graduation rate and a 85% college-career readiness rate. Over 90% of our students are on track to walk across the stage and pursue college, a trade school, the military, or the workforce. All high school students also take a fourth year of math, which puts them on track for a high college-career readiness rate. SMSD is on track to meet or exceed the goal.
Goal 3. Provide a safe, healthy, and inviting environment for all students.
The goal is to have 75% or more of our students feel safe and connected to school. Midyear, over 70% of the students communicated feeling respected and connected to school. SMSD is on track to meet or exceed the goal.
Goal 4. Improve communication between the school district and the community. The goal is to increase family engagement through different information platforms (i.e., newsletters, district/school websites, and the district/school Facebook pages). There are multiple home-school events each quarter. People can now find weekly updated information on the websites and FB posts. Attendance for school-home conferences is over 90%. These data points are evidence of improved communication.
SMSD Lumberjacks and Panthers continue to work hard. Our work is not done until 100% of our students meet these goals.
