Sunday Chat with Principal Dothard
Hello Hornet Nation,
I have a question, how do you become a winner? It does start by claiming yourself as a winner because if you can't visualize yourself doing everything right and coming out victorious, you have already lost. Do your actions match your words? One of the largest sports tournaments in the world is about to begin, March Madness. Do you think the team that will come out victorious just sat around envisioning themselves winning? These teams are not lucky, they have put in the work when nobody was watching, and they took care of their bodies physically and mentally. They made sacrifices of sleep and time away from friends and family. The price of greatness is only ever really seen by those who are great and those closest to them. In order to become a winner, you have to be willing to make changes and adaptations and it starts one day at a time. How many wins did you get throughout the day? Many people say there are mental victories in just making your bed daily because you have started your day by completing a full task. In a book that I'm reading, alright, I'm not reading it, I'm listening to it, called "The Power of Moments" by Chip Heath and Dan Heath, one of the successful people he meets with discusses how every day she had to explain one thing she failed at to her dad. She said he did this because if you were too afraid to try new things, you will always remain in a box. I guess for her the 3rd time was really the charm because her first 2 businesses failed and her 3rd one is very successful. So, I guess I say this to get to a few points. First, never put yourself in a box because of other people's expectations of you. Second, we never learn how to win without failing and studying other people's failures. There is much to learn from failing. Last, a large victory is made of strings of small victories. Every day challenge yourself to win in an area you know you need to grow. If you know you procrastinate, challenge yourself to start and finish one assignment early. If you don't have patience for "dumb stuff", challenge yourself to handle a situation that would normally make you upset differently. In the end, if you won't do the things for yourself to be a winner, who will?
March is women's History Month and in the words of Tupac, "none of us would be here without a woman", so take a minute to acknowledge the strong women in your life.
We have a lot of things going on this week including our first Senior Graduation meeting of the school year! Seniors, please don't wait until the last minute to meet all your expectations.
Let's have a GREAT week Hornet Nation!

Student Cell Phone Use
Did you know that even just a few minutes on a cell phone texting, checking social media, etc adds up over the course of a school day? Students, who use their devices for just 5 minutes each period, lose nearly 1 period of instructional time per day (35 minutes of class). Over the course of 1 week, those 5 minutes per class adds up to nearly 4 missed periods! Personal devices can be a HUGE distraction for students. Please start this year off right, by keeping personal devices away in your bookbag or at a charging station if your teacher has one available. There is a direct connection to phone usage during the school day to grades. Encourage your student/s to only use their phone during lunch, between classes, or when approved by a teacher.
