Kicking Off the 2024-2025 School Year: What’s New and Exciting at CMIT North!
From the Principal’s Desk
Dear CMIT North High School Parents and Guardians,
As we embark on another academic year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the positive energy and dedication that have marked the start of our journey together. We have successfully navigated the first days of school, and I’m pleased to share that our students are highly motivated and focused on achieving their goals. Their enthusiasm for a successful school year is truly inspiring.
Before the students returned, we hosted our teachers for a productive pre-service week. During this time, they engaged in activities aimed at strengthening our school culture and participated in departmental professional development sessions. These efforts have laid a solid foundation for the year ahead.
Ms. Colandrea is working closely with the 9th and 10th grade teams, while Ms. Andrew is collaborating with the 11th and 12th grade teams to ensure that we serve our students effectively. Dr. Gaskins has been diligently organizing student orientations to ensure that everyone has a clear understanding of our expectations. In addition, our teachers are reviewing classroom rules and procedures with their students to guarantee a smooth and safe transition between activities. We will continue using the eHall Pass system and the Kickboard point system to support a positive and organized school environment.
We are still in the process of hiring a qualified English teacher. If you know anyone who is eligible and interested in teaching at the high school level, please encourage them to share their resume with our school officials.
We are always looking for ways to enrich our students' experience. If you have expertise or a passion for a particular activity, we would love to have you volunteer to lead a club at our school. Additionally, donations to support our athletic programs and after-school activities are greatly appreciated and will help provide our students with more opportunities to thrive.
I am also pleased to report that traffic flow during the first days of school was smoother than expected. I truly appreciate the effort our parents put into reviewing and adhering to the traffic procedures. Your cooperation is vital in ensuring the safety of our students and making the traffic flow faster. Please continue to follow these procedures throughout the year.
For ongoing communication, we are utilizing emails, newsletters, social media, and our school website. Please frequently check these platforms for updates and important information.
Thank you once again for your ongoing collaboration and support. Together, we can make this a successful and fulfilling year for our students.
Gonul Ozturk,
Principal, CMIT North High School
Welcome Back: Key Updates from the Administration
Welcome to another school year! My name is Ms. Colandrea, and I am a proud assistant principal at CMIT North High School, where it is a pleasure to work with you and your students. This year marks my 13th year at CMIT and my 7th year as an assistant principal. In this capacity, I supervise the English, Social Studies, and Special Education departments and the 9th and 10th grades.
Over the years, I have enjoyed watching our students grow into confident, capable, and compassionate young adults in the challenging yet supportive environment we provide. Our teams are dedicated. Our services are plentiful and have recently expanded to include partnerships promoting wellness and supporting students' overall well-being. We have also added opportunities for 9th- and 10th-grade students to gain academic, social, and emotional skills during the school day through participation in our Academic Resource classes. Of course, we would not succeed in our efforts without our families. As parents and guardians, you will find opportunities to participate in your student's growth and development through workshops and other events. We hope you will join us!
This year holds the promise of greatness, and I look forward to working with all of you.
Ms. Tammy Colandrea

Exciting News from Team Illusion!🤖
Team Illusion is gearing up for the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition**, with this year’s theme focusing on the environment around reefs—a unique challenge for land-based robots! We’re excited to see how HAAS and others will tackle this. While the specific events are yet to be decided, the competition will run from March to June 2025. Although the official robot build starts in January, we’re already collaborating with sponsors like MASER beginning in September to master essential building techniques. We need passionate builders and innovators to help us create our competition robot.https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc

Project Update: Powering the LED Bulletin Sign
Team Illusion is hard at work on making our LED bulletin sign more energy-efficient. We've begun discussions on how to improve the sign's power usage. Currently, the sign lights up all 10,240 LEDs at once, drawing about 204 watts of power, which drains the battery after just four hours. Even with a timer on the circuit, the battery still struggles to charge properly on cloudy days.
Our next step is to test running the sign without a colored background to reduce power consumption. If that works, students will plan how to limit the number of LEDs on at the same time and calculate what changes are needed to power the full display efficiently. We're confident we can find a solution and keep our sign shining bright!
Are you passionate about problem-solving, technology, or just love a good challenge? Join Team Illusion and be part of an innovative group working on real-world engineering projects like our LED bulletin sign. Whether you're into design, coding, or just want to learn something new, there's a place for you here. Sign up now at STEM Teams Interest Sign-Up Form and help us light up the future! 💡

A Glimpse into the Summer '24 Highlights
STEM Summer Institute
This past summer, our students, including our dedicated STEM Ambassadors, had the incredible opportunity to immerse themselves in hands-on learning at the STEM Summer Institute. Participants explored a variety of activities, such as preparing for the Science Olympiad with rigorous scientific challenges, writing research papers for STEM Fair competitions, and honing their skills in VEX and FIRST Robotics (FRC). They also delved into coding workshops, sharpened their math skills, and engaged in TRACC bridge-building projects. Additionally, students focused on environmental awareness, learning about sustainability and how to apply STEM principles to protect our planet. It was a summer full of growth, creativity, and inspiration, paving the way for an exciting year ahead!
Summer Bridge Program
Our Rising Grade 9 students recently participated in the Summer Bridge Program, a special initiative created by Tammy Colandrea, the Grade 9 and 10 Assistant Principal. Designed to ease the transition into high school, the program featured engaging workshops, team-building exercises, and academic previews. Students enjoyed hands-on classes in math and English, two key subjects that are critical for state testing. They also gained insights into core subjects, learned essential study techniques, and had opportunities to connect with future teachers and peers. Beyond academics, the program helped students build confidence and forge connections that will support them throughout their high school journey, setting them up for success in the years ahead!
The Social Studies Curriculum Writing
Under the leadership of Mrs. Jessica Cunning, the Chair of Social Studies, the Social Studies Curriculum Writing initiative took place last summer. This project focused on developing a comprehensive and engaging curriculum that covers key historical, geographical, and cultural concepts. By incorporating diverse perspectives and interactive learning methods, the initiative aims to create a dynamic educational experience that fosters critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the world. This new curriculum will meet academic standards and inspire students to explore and appreciate the complexities of social studies in a meaningful way.
Elevating Excellence: Green Ribbon Awards and Cognia Certification Update
Three dedicated educators—Dr. Gemma Clarke, Program Coordinator for STEM; Mr. John Hall, Health Teacher; and Ms. Michelle de Guzman, Science Teacher—worked tirelessly last summer to enhance our school’s reputation by developing Pillar 1 of the Green Ribbon Awards and contributing to Pillars 2 and 3. The Green Ribbon Awards, presented by the U.S. Department of Education, honor schools that excel in environmental sustainability, health and wellness, and innovative educational practices, recognizing those that set a high standard and inspire others.
In addition, they initiated the process for Cognia certification, which provides external validation of our school’s effectiveness. Cognia certification emphasizes continuous improvement and the enhancement of student learning outcomes, ensuring that our educational practices meet rigorous standards. This evaluation includes a thorough review of our STEM programs, reinforcing our commitment to academic excellence.
Starting in September, the PGCPS Schimith Center will begin mentoring our team in preparation for the upcoming competition and certification. This support will help ensure our school makes a significant impact as a STEM leader both within the district and beyond.

Paige Kim - Art Teacher
"Hello CMIT N HS staff, teachers, parents, and students,
My name is Paige Kim, the one and only art teacher at our CMIT North High School.
This is my first year at CMIT North High School, and I am very thankful and excited to work with all the staff, teachers, and students at our school this year.
I am an artist-educator and I taught art for all ages in Maryland and Virginia for twelve years. This is my thirteenth year of teaching and I am learning a lot every year as a teacher. I have worked endlessly as a teacher since 2011, and I also make my own artwork and participate in exhibitions around the state.
Our CMIT N HS's art program will guide our students learn various types of art and art materials, engage in learning art, collaborate with each other to create projects, be creative and motivated, and apply and appreciate what they are learning in art classrooms.
My goal for this school year for all our 9th through 12th grade students is that they can practice various skills of art so that they create each project with creativity, freedom of expression, thoroughness, and execution. Not just simply enjoying making art, but they also can enjoy shaping ideas together with me, the teacher, and other classmates.
Throughout the first week of school, we started and finished our first art project - Word Art Self-Portrait. In this project, students were allowed to use a self-expression of themselves in words, letters, and symbols with smart ideas and artistic visuals. They learned how to sketch a self-portrait and used various words and sentences to write over the lines they created.
We will showcase the students' works on the walls in the hallway for all the staff, teachers, and students to see.
I can't wait to do all the inspiring projects in my head with them one by one this year. They are already showing me many potentials in art, great skills, and creativity.

Dear CMIT Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to a new school year at CMIT North High! Whether you’re joining us for the first time or returning, we’re excited to have you.
I’m Nurse McDonald, the school nurse here at CMIT North High PCS. I’m thrilled to be working with our students, staff, and families to ensure the wellbeing and safety of everyone in our school community. Below, you’ll find important health information that will help keep your child healthy and safe throughout the year.
Flu Prevention:
The best way to prevent the flu is by getting the flu vaccine. Additionally, please encourage your child to:
Wash their hands frequently, especially before meals.
Get plenty of rest and sleep (9-11 hours each night for school-age children).
Stay home if they are sick to prevent spreading illness to others.
Medication at School:
If your child needs to take medication during school hours, a signed physician's medication order is required for all prescriptions and medical care plans. This documentation must be provided to the school nurse annually.
Medications should not be delivered to the school by the student.
The school nurse cannot administer medication without a signed prescription order form.
Action plans are required for conditions such as food/insect allergies, asthma, diabetes, and seizures. These must be signed and submitted to the school nurse.
Medical Conditions
Please keep the school nurse and staff informed of any health conditions that could impact your child while at school.
I look forward to working with you and your child this school year. Thank you in advance for your cooperation, and I wish everyone a happy and healthy year ahead!
Warm regards,

Chemistry Honors Class Update: Reflecting on Our First Week
As we wrap up our first week of chemistry, I’m excited to share some of the creative and engaging activities our students have participated in. This week, we focused on setting the stage for a successful year by introducing the curriculum and classroom expectations.
One of the highlights was our "My Periodic Square" activity, where each student designed a unique square that represents them. They included their birthdate as a decimal point in one corner, illustrated something meaningful to them in the center, and added their name under the image. These squares now adorn our classroom wall, forming our very own class periodic table. It’s been wonderful to see each student’s personality shine through in their creations, and it’s a great visual reminder of the diverse and talented group we have this year.
I’m looking forward to sharing more of our journey with you as we dive deeper into the world of chemistry. Stay tuned for more updates, and be sure to check out the photos of our class periodic table!
