LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Santa Rita Families,
I hope you and your family are enjoying all of the seasonal festivities. I’m looking for a few parent volunteers to help bring the AMC 8 Math Competition to Santa Rita. Please email Denise Khalid (dkhalid@lasdschools.org) if you are interested in volunteering.
The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice competition exam for middle school math students, done without calculators. Although the AMC 8 is geared toward middle school, a student at any age can participate in the AMC 8 competition. Students as young as 8 have participated in the AMC contests, but this competition is entirely optional. The competition is run by the Mathematical Association of America, which scores the test.
Character Strong November Focus
October is a memory, and November is here. With that comes our new Character Strong character trait of the month…Gratitude. Please take a moment to read this one-page Family Newsletter outlining this character trait. Connecting what we are focusing on here at Springer with the things you are doing at home is very impactful for our students. I thank you in advance for taking the time.
Parent Teacher Conferences
October has ended, and November has begun, and with that comes our annual Parent/Teacher Conferences. Attending parent/teacher conferences is critical to ensuring your child's success at Santa Rita. If you have not already done so, please select a day/time with your child’s teacher to meet with them.
Front Office Translation Support: Mr. Abel Velaquez is available Monday through Friday 8:15-12:30 to help with Spanish translation.

Independent Study Plans
The California Department of Education writes the regulations on excused and unexcused absences and these policies have been adopted by the LASD Board of Trustees. A full list and the associated Education Code numbers can be found via the LASD Board Policies website.
The most common excused reasons for a student to be late or absent are:
1. Personal illness
2. Medical, dental, optometrical, or chiropractic appointments
3. Religious observance
Vacations, trips, and are considered unexcused absences, even when the school office is notified in advance.
Independent Study Plans can be utilized if your student is going to be absent from school for an unexcused reason and the office is notified in advance of the trip.
The process of an ISP is as follows:
Each student may utilize a maximum of 15 ISP days per school year
Please notify office the dates of absence as soon as possible
All Independent Study Plans are subject to principal approval
Work MUST be completed during the absence and returned to school
Parent to initiate the ISP. Please use this link
Work is not allowed to be completed ahead of time. Students or parents must return the work to the office on the day after ISP ends, even if the student is not at school.

Vision Screenings for K, 2nd & 5th
The District Nurses will be doing vision screenings at Santa Rita for all Kindergarten, 2nd, and 5th grades on November 12, 2024. If your child has glasses or contacts, please make sure that they wear them to school on the day of the screening. The nurse will mail a referral form to the parents of students who do not pass the vision screening.
How are LASD schools funded, and why do we need to raise money each school year?
It’s complicated! Many sources come together to keep our schools strong: property taxes, parcel taxes, bonds, and support from organizations like LAEF and school PTAs.
The Citizens Advisory Committee for Finance - CACF, is a strong oversight body that monitors long-term LASD finances, including parcel tax expenditures. They recently came to an LAEF board meeting to educate representatives from all 9 LASD schools about how it all comes together to fund our excellent schools. Here’s a recording and the slide deck of the presentation: The ABCs of LASD Finance.
LAEF is helping fund teachers and staff this school year. Have a look at our annual grant to see how your donations are being spent. Learn more about the process of how we decide what to fund each school year. If you have yet to give for 2024-25, donate to LAEF today.
