Kiela Moreno from the HRSA-funded Center of Excellence in MCH at the University of Illinois at Chicago is the newest author for the Health Equity Edition of MCH Leads, the national student-led MCH trainee blog. In her blog post, Kiela applies MCH competencies 4 (Critical Thinking) and 6 (Negotiation and Conflict Resolution) to her practicum experience as an intern with CityMatCH, where she assisted with planning logistics for the 2022 national conference and supported the work of the Perinatal HIV Task Force.
“From this experience, I learned how potential conflicts could arise in terminology and concepts in the interdisciplinary setting, and how these situations present a unique opportunity for us to understand different perspectives. As we embark on this journey to center the experiences of the population we hope to serve, we must prioritize their experiences and feedback.” Continue reading more about Kiela’s health equity efforts.

6. Preventing Births to Teens Is Associated With Long-term Health and Socioeconomic Benefits, According to Simulation | Child Trends
Reducing teen pregnancy rates in the U.S. has been a federal program priority for several decades; since peaking in the early 1990s, birth rates among adolescents ages 15 to 19 have declined substantially. While numerous studies of early childbearing have identified lower socioeconomic attainment for parents and poorer developmental outcomes for children, the long-term health and socioeconomic effects of early childbearing for parents are also a concern and have not been assessed. This brief from Child Trends shares the long-term positive effects on education, physical and mental health, earnings, poverty, and lifetime income when births by teens are prevented.
