Miller Weekly Update
Week of May 19, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Miller School Community,
As the year continues to wind down, there are a lot of exciting things happening in and around our school. Our band students performed at the annual Spring Concert at Fernwood Avenue School on Wednesday evening. They put on quite a show. We could not be more proud of their performance. We also wrapped up NJSLA testing this week. Next week our 5th grade students will attend their end of the year trip to Castaway Cove in Ocean City, NJ and our orchestra students will perform at their annual Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 29th.
As a reminder, our school district will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 27th. We honor the service and sacrifice of the fallen. School will reopen on Tuesday, May 28th. I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend.
Jim Battersby
Principal

Student Achievement
WordMasters Challengeâ„¢
Miss Hunt and Mrs. Pettit, the Gifted and Talented teachers here at the Miller School, are happy to share that a student representing Miller School recently received a perfect score in the last of three meets in the 2023-2024 WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually. Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, fifth grader Jasvi Patel earned a perfect score of 20 on the recent challenge. (This is Jasvi’s second perfect score this year!) Nationally, only 33 fifth graders out of approximately 2,260 students in her division achieved this result. Other students from Miller School who achieved outstanding results in the meet include fifth graders Isaac Bae and Aisha Hossain. They each scored 19 of 20, joining only 69 other students nationally. In addition, fourth graders JJ Munyon and Cassandra Perry achieved outstanding results competing in the difficult Blue Division. Both students also scored 19 of 20 along with 73 students out of over 3,600 students in their division nationally. The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies. The WordMasters Challenge™ program is administered by a company based in New Jersey, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. Further information is available at the company’s website: http://www.wordmasterschallenge.com.
Geographical Regions of New Jersey
In Social Studies, students are learning about communities. The class is applying what they are learning about to their own state and community. In this lesson, students had to research the 5 geographical regions of New Jersey. Then, they created maps to show the differences in each region.
Ms. Marruso's Class is Learning About Sounds
In Science, Ms. Marruso's class is learning about sounds. They studied wavelengths of sounds and the pitch of sounds. Today, we collaborated with Ms. Sara to investigate our learning. Students played different instruments and looked for how to play a high pitch and how to play a low pitch!
