Shocker Standouts:
Counselors' Corner
The last few weeks have reinforced the necessity of flexibility and adaptability. These are life skills that are often overlooked but should taught and modeled throughout elementary and middle school. Being flexible and adaptable helps students handle changes in plans, schedules, relationships, and environments. Developmentally, the ability to stay calm in the face of unexpected challenges and changes is something that we often don’t see until at least middle school. However, in our ever-changing world, it is important that we foster that ability.
As parents – you can model empathy and discuss different viewpoints and perspectives. You can also demonstrate how you adapt to unexpected challenges, acknowledge mistakes, and learn from them. During dinner, share about what unexpected things happened during your day and how you handled them. A fun way to encourage adaptability is to try new experiences as a family to get everyone out of their comfort zone – eat at a Ethiopian restaurant, visit a different religious house of worship, try a new family hobby like gardening or fishing. If you have the means to travel, traveling is always a lesson in adaptability and flexibility!
Eighth Grade Experiences the Butterfly Project
On Tuesday, March 4, some of our eighth grade students visited Charlotte's Jewish Community Center to take part in the Butterfly Project, an educational experience that introduces young people to the ideas and actions that lead to genocide. It also focuses on Holocaust remembrance, with students painting a butterfly in honor of a single child, whose name is spoken, that was among the 1.5 million children lost in the Holocaust.
Unfortunately, the stormy day on Wednesday postponed the trip for some of our classes, and the trip's second day has been rescheduled for May 20.
Students painted ceramic butterflies, which were brought back to school to become part of an art installation.
