A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Happy Spring Break, Titan Families! It is so difficult to believe that three-fourths of the school year has passed by so quickly and that it is already spring break! Then, when we return, the fourth quarter of the year will pass even faster- with state testing rapidly approaching, field trips, 8th grade celebration, spring sports and activities, concerts, the third Title I family night, and all the other end-of-the-year events that occur. Time flies when we’re having fun!
Looking ahead to testing season, our 8th graders are taking the nationally normed PSAT 8/9 on March 26. Then, the AK STAR Alaska System of Academic Readiness testing window opens for our students. There are practice tests available online, so if you find your student in need of something to do over spring break and you would like them to practice for the upcoming testing season, the State has provided a link to practice tests online at: https://akstar-assess.state.nwea.org/inbrowser/index.html
This is a great resource, especially to help students practice and prepare for the upcoming testing season, to get more familiar with the testing platform and the testing resources. Practicing can also help students reduce the anxiety that they may experience during testing season, too, as they are more familiar with the testing environment before the actual test.
Please remember that our spring break has been extended a little bit this year, as we do not return to TMS until Tuesday, March 19. When we come back that day, we will be operating on an 8:45 am start (like a Monday PD schedule).
Thank you so much for all your support for your child’s education and for our amazing staff at TMS! We appreciate all our TMS families! Take care and have a fantastic spring break!
Sincerely,
Ms. Karla Head, Principal

A MESSAGE FROM NURSE INGRAHAM
Dear TMS parents, students and staff, I have two important messages this Month:
The First : Middle of peak season for viral, respiratory, and cold symptoms, it's crucial to ensure that our students are equipped with the knowledge and practices to maintain their health and well-being. I would like to remind everyone of the importance of the following:
- Hand Hygiene: Encourage students to practice good hand hygiene by washing their hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Additionally, hand sanitizer can be used as an alternative when soap and water are not readily available.
- Nutrition: Breakfast is often referred to as the most important meal of the day. Please remind students of the significance of eating a nutritious breakfast to fuel their bodies and minds for the day ahead. Adequate nutrition plays a vital role in supporting the immune system and overall health.
- Sleep Hygiene: Sufficient and quality sleep is essential for overall well-being and immune function. Encourage students to establish healthy sleep habits by maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a conducive sleep environment, and minimizing screen time before bedtime.
Given the increase in viral and respiratory illnesses during this time of the year, it's imperative that we remain vigilant in promoting these health practices among our students.
As always, please continue to emphasize the importance of these habits in your interactions with students. By reinforcing these practices, we can help minimize the spread of illnesses and ensure a healthier school environment for everyone.
The second: as we transition into spring after a long and dark winter, it's important to be mindful of the mental health and well-being of our students. The change in seasons, coupled with increased activity and daylight, can have varying effects on individuals, and we must remain vigilant in monitoring for signs of mental health concerns.
With the onset of spring, we often observe an increase in activity levels among our students. While this can bring a sense of rejuvenation and excitement, it's also essential to recognize that it may coincide with challenges related to mental health. The following are important points to consider:
- Increased Risk of Depression: Some students may experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or other forms of depression during the darker winter months. As the days grow longer and sunlight becomes more abundant, symptoms of depression may alleviate for some but exacerbate for others.
- Monitoring for Signs of Depression and Suicidal Thoughts: Please remain vigilant and observant for signs of depression, such as persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, and feelings of hopelessness. Additionally, be attentive to any mentions or indications of suicidal thoughts or intentions.
- Behavioral Changes: The transition into spring may also coincide with changes in behavior. Increased irritability, restlessness, or poor behavior could be indicators of underlying mental health issues that require attention and support.
As educators and mentors, it's crucial that we create a supportive and nurturing environment where students feel comfortable discussing their emotions and seeking help when needed. Encourage open dialogue and provide resources for mental health support within the school community.
If you observe any concerning behaviors or notice changes in students' emotional well-being, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or the appropriate support staff. Together, we can ensure that our students receive the care and assistance they need to thrive mentally and emotionally.
Thank you for your continued dedication to the well-being of our students.
Thank you for your cooperation and dedication to the well-being of our students.
