Great ShakeOut- 10/19 @ 10:19 a.m.
Dear Mattos Families,
This Thursday is the Great ShakeOut- a time for all schools in FUSD to practice Duck, Cover, and Hold in incidences of earthquakes. Mattos students will participate at 10:19 a.m. and then do a full disaster drill which leads them all to the large baseball field. We will practice "rescuing" students from the buildings and "first aid". Please help prepare your student for this by discussing what to do in an earthquake and the importance of listening to all adults in an emergency situation.

This has been a wonderful start to the school year. As we implement our S.O.A.R. expectations, we hope students will be excited to be recognized for their behavior with our SAM tickets.
This month I have been in classrooms presenting a lesson on RUDE, MEAN, BULLYING and Size of the Problem for 3-5th graders. For kindergarten-2nd grade, I have presented a lesson on Kind vs. Unkind behaviors and Size of the Problem. Both lessons emphasized the importance of recognizing how to react to behaviors or problems in a respectable manner (Pebble, Rock or Boulder). Student's learned how to problem solve by using "I" statements when they are feeling upset, mad, angry.
I’m hopeful students will use the strategies that were taught to them throughout the school day.
Attendance Matters
It’s a myth that only unexcused absences are causes for concern. Health-related absences may be marked as excused, yet time away from the classroom is a lost opportunity to learn and make connections. There are steps families and schools can take to try to limit health-related absences. We worked with a number of national health organizations on guidance that clearly communicates that students can attend with minor illnesses, and discusses when kids should stay home and seek advice from a health provider. For guidance as to when to keep your child home, please see Health Guidance for Going to School.
