This Week @ PS 88Q
June 22, 2025
Last Day of School is Thursday June 26th
A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy
As we close out another incredible school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the outstanding achievements of our students and staff and share the remarkable journey we've experienced together. It’s been a year of growth, hard work, and celebration, and I couldn’t be more proud of all that we’ve accomplished as a school community.
This year, our students thrived academically, socially, and emotionally. Every day, they worked hard to challenge themselves, not by competing with each other, but by competing with their own personal limits. They set goals, they persevered through challenges, and they learned how to be better versions of themselves. Whether it was mastering a new concept in the classroom, building deeper relationships with their peers, or navigating new emotional growth, our students consistently demonstrated resilience, curiosity, and kindness. And none of this would have been possible without the tireless support and dedication of our incredible staff. Together, we’ve built an environment where learning is celebrated, effort is valued, and growth is at the center of everything we do.
This year, PS 88Q was recognized in many wonderful ways, and we are proud of the attention our school has received. From hosting visits from Mayor Adams and our Chancellor to being featured on NY1, ABC World News with David Muir, and an article in the Queens Post, it’s clear that the hard work and determination of our students and staff have not gone unnoticed. While this recognition is certainly an honor and well-deserved, the true magic of PS 88Q happens every single day within our classrooms, hallways, and playgrounds. What we do here is remarkable, and it’s only getting better as we look ahead.
We have so much to look forward to in the 2025-2026 school year. The upcoming year promises even more growth, new opportunities, and exciting changes that will make PS 88Q an even more vibrant place for learning and development. We’ll continue to work together to push boundaries, celebrate successes, and support one another in every step of our journey.
As we head into summer, I encourage each of you to take the time to rest, recharge, and enjoy the activities that bring you joy. For those of you joining Summer Rising at PS 88Q, I look forward to seeing you on July 2! For everyone else, I hope you have a wonderful, relaxing summer filled with memories you’ll cherish.
Thank you for an incredible year, and I can’t wait to see all that we will accomplish together in the year to come.

Grade 4 Basketball Team Vs. Grade 5 Basketball Team
The gymnasium buzzed with excitement as the Grade 4 basketball team, under the expert guidance of coaches Ms. Bloom and Mr. DeCastro, squared off against the formidable Grade 5 Eagles. With their own coaches, Mr. Tripotseris and Mr. Nolan leading the charge, the Grade 5 team had already proven themselves worthy competitors, making it to this year's championship game. As the whistle blew and the game began, it quickly became clear that this was no ordinary matchup. The Grade 4 team was hungry for victory, determined to fill the shoes of their older counterparts. Their energy was infectious, and they pushed the Grade 5 Eagles to their limits, delivering a fast-paced, high-energy game that had the crowd on their feet. Despite the fierce competition, it was the Grade 5 Eagles who ultimately soared to victory, securing the win after a hard-fought battle. But the real story of the game wasn't just the final score—it was the spirit of the young athletes, both on and off the court. From incredible teamwork to individual moments of brilliance, every player showed tremendous heart and dedication. While the Grade 5 team took home the win this time, all eyes are now on the Grade 4 squad. With their impressive performance, they’ve certainly earned the respect of everyone watching, and it looks like they’re ready to make a serious run at next year’s championship game! What a game, and what a future for both teams! The excitement is just beginning.

Fun Run !
The final Fun Run of the year was an unforgettable morning, full of energy, determination, and community spirit. Led by the inspiring Ms. Prinzevalli, and Ms. Hartman, whose passion for fitness has ignited a spark in the students, the event showcased the incredible progress made by our Grade 1, 2, and 3 runners throughout the year.
For weeks, these young athletes participated in early morning workouts, pushing their limits and preparing for this very day. Their hard work culminated in a spectacular run through the streets and around the track, where their commitment was on full display.
The morning was filled with excitement as the students took on their individual challenges. Some ran four laps around the block, while others completed more than two laps around the track. Regardless of the distance, all runners demonstrated impressive perseverance, moving forward with grit and enthusiasm, encouraged by cheers from family members and supportive posters lining the route.
This event wasn’t just about running; it was about learning valuable life lessons. From setting goals to practicing patience, every student walked away with more than just a medal—they learned the importance of pushing through challenges and celebrating their personal progress.
As the runners crossed the finish line, they were met with a well-earned medal to recognize their fantastic effort. It was a heartwarming moment for all, a true testament to what can be achieved through dedication, support, and a little bit of fun. What a great way to end the year!

Superintendent Survey
Below is the QR Code for the Superintendent’s Listening Tour Survey. This initiative is being conducted through a digital input form designed to gather meaningful feedback from families.
The goal is to hear directly from parents and families about your priorities and needs regarding your child’s education. Your voices will help inform district planning and support, aligning with the Superintendent’s ongoing commitment to partnership, transparency, and responsive leadership.
This effort is grounded in the belief that family voice is essential to shaping a school district that reflects the needs and aspirations of the communities it serves.

Message From Our Chancellor
Recognizing and Celebrating Excellence
Dear Families and Colleagues,
At this time of year, it’s important to reflect on the achievements of our New York City Public Schools community—from our students who are graduating to employees who have gone above and beyond in their work. I’m proud that as a system, we take time to recognize these community members in a number of ways. Here are just a few:
- Big Apple Awards: These annual awards celebrate incredible teachers from across the city. Learn about one of this year’s winners in the Chancellor’s Spotlight below!
- Climate Leadership Awards: This year, we celebrated 130 students and staff members who are leading the way in climate action and sustainability efforts.
- Hunger Heroes: This annual honor goes to exceptional food service workers in our schools, to recognize their efforts to keep our kids healthy and nourished.
- New York State Seal of Biliteracy: Earlier this month, we celebrated over 2,500 of our high school students who are graduating with this certification, which acknowledges their multilingualism and may qualify them for college credit, including at CUNY!
And these awards are just a small sample of the many forms of recognition happening at the central, district, and school levels. Across every borough, our teams are finding creative and meaningful ways to recognize and celebrate growth and achievement. To everyone who is being honored this spring, congratulations!
In partnership,
Melissa Aviles-Ramos
Chancellor
PS 88Q: A Community That Grows Together
At PS 88Q, we believe that the heart of a great school is its people — educators who not only teach, but truly believe in the vision of the community they serve. As our school continues to grow and thrive — proudly participating in the Small Class Size Pilot — we are always seeking passionate staff who reflect our values and are ready to make an impact.
We look for individuals who:
-
Listen deeply to what children need
-
Embrace diversity and see it as a strength
-
Approach challenges with a growth mindset
-
Solve problems proactively and collaboratively
-
Above all, are supported in their journey — professionally and personally
When you step into PS 88Q, you’ll find a team that believes in kids, lifts each other up, and works side-by-side to build something bigger than themselves.
To help share this message, Mr. Seeger — one of our incredible educators — directed, filmed, and produced a powerful recruitment video that captures the essence of PS 88Q. Because when it comes to telling our story, nobody does it better than the people who live it every day.
Whether you're a prospective educator or simply curious about our mission, we invite you to watch, listen, and feel what makes our school so special. Because at PS 88Q, we don’t just hire staff — we build a community.
