HHES
Greetings, Families,
Happy Mother's Day to all of you moms out there- as well as to so many who are acting in the mom role! We hope you enjoyed a day to celebrate you!
This Tuesday is our 2nd async Community Day! It is not too late to sign up and join in on the fun, help, and plethora of resources (and yes, you may also vote!)! Please email Mr. Rhoades at drrhoades@ccps.org to let him know who will attend. Additional information may be found below.
It is time to celebrate! For the first time all year, Holly Hall is above the attendance average for Cecil County! We know it isn't easy and sometimes it doesn't feel worth the fight, but keep going! The only way to support our students is for them to be at school on a regular basis. If you need any assistance with getting your child to school, please reach out to Mr. David Rhoades at drrhoades@ccps.org.
Students in grades 3, 4, & 5 completed their MCAP (Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program)
assessments for ELA last week and are ready to take on this week in the area of mathematics. This is their time to shine from all of their hard work!
To best support your child, here are a few tips:
- Help your child get to bed on time. Research shows being well-rested helps students do better.
- Talk to your child before going to bed to ensure they are relaxed but don't dwell on testing as to not create anxiety.
- Plan ahead and get up early to ensure a smooth morning.
- Always start with a good breakfast! (Breakfast will still be served at school.)
- Be positive with your child and let them know you believe in them. They will not know all of the answers, but they are prepared with strategies to do their best!
- Finally, when back at home, ask your child about their day and how they felt with the assessment. Let them know you are proud of their efforts!
Be sure to check out the calendar below to participate in our school wide MCAP spirit days!
Attention Families Heading to Elkton Middle School Next Year: EMS will host an Open House event on Monday, May 20, from 5:00 - 6:00. Families will meet some key staff members, tour the building, and find out about Jump Start!

Even if you do not have a child to enroll, join us for a fun day of play, music, fun and food! The famous Uncle Brothers will be there to perform at 11:15.
Hope to see you there!
PreSchool's Trike-a-Palooza
In conjunction with the Judy Center and the Cecil County Emergency Services Department, Mrs. Wiley and Mrs. Webster hosted a most wonderful event!
Children enjoyed riding tricycles through obstacle courses while listening to music. Mrs. Lucas from the Cecil County Emergency Services Department (and also a HHES parent) talked about bike safety. She gifted each child with a bike helmet and a goodie bag. The children made personalized bike license plates and received a bike horn from The Judy Center. It was a fun time and the children had a blast!
Check out the fun in this PS Slideshow!
Growing Readers
The phonemes produced when reading the letters b and p are often confused by struggling or emerging readers as the manner of articulation is identical. When producing each sound, the speaker’s lip, tongue and jaw placements are exactly the same. The lips come together to stop the airflow, and a small amount of air pressure builds up behind the lips. The air is then released as the lips open. What differs is the voicing. The P consonant is voiceless meaning it is produced with just air passing through the vocal cords and out of the mouth. The vocal cords are turned off as you say this sound. P is the “quiet brother.” The B consonant is voiced meaning the vocal cords are turned on as this sound is produced. You should feel a vibration in the throat when you say it. B is the “noisy brother.” Pointing out the similarities and differences between the production of these two phonemes is beneficial for mastering the correct letter sounds!
