If you're able to find a way (however small) to show your appreciation for our incredible librarian, Mme McMahon, please do! Mme McMahon sources, stocks, organizes and manages Kenwood's library which is filled with thousands of French and English titles to match all of our student's reading levels and quite varied interests (this is no small feat). She sees almost every single student in her library each week, reads to them, teaches them AND supports the rest of the teacher and staff. A simple kind word I'm sure would make her day but if you're able to send a drawing, a card or a flower, feel free. Her hobbies include cooking, baking, photography, walking and gardening. Her favorite snacks are nuts (almonds, walnuts & peanuts), cheese, Twix, dark chocolate, homemade bread and cookies. Gift card ideas are Chipotle, Bibibop, Amazon, Awadh India Restaurant and Target. All of this information was found on the PTO's Staff 'All About Me' page if you're looking for gift ideas for upcoming Teacher Appreciation Week (May5th-9th), Nurses Day (May 6th) or the end of the year!

Congratulations To Mme Debnam and Her Team Of Invention Convention Participants!
Sama Jourdi, Lillie Moore-Vinazza, Arielle Hood, Brielle Jamison, Ja'Ceonna Bell, Stoyan Daskalov, James Spoonmore, Violet Buscemi and Hayden Rehs-Dupin all worked hard innovating and took their projects to Invention Convention under the leadership of Gifted & Talented teacher, Mme Debnam. Below is an article Columbus City Schools published about the competition:
YOUNG INVENTORS SHINE AT CCS INVENTION CONVENTION, TACKLING REAL-WORLD CHALLENGES
March 17, 2025 --- One day in class, while fidgeting with a pair of scissors, fifth grader James Spoonmore had an idea. The Ecole Kenwood French Immersion student wondered: How do people with hand disabilities use scissors?
His solution was The Clap Cutter, a pair of scissors with finger braces that allow a person to insert a finger from each hand to cut. With help from his father, he printed a 3D prototype. The experience sparked a passion for invention.
“This was fun, and my dad got to help me,” Spoonmore said.
Spoonmore was one of 36 students who showcased their inventions at the Columbus City Schools Invention Convention in March. The event brought together students from Oakland Park Elementary, Ridgeview Middle School, Ecole Kenwood French Immersion, and Weinland Park Elementary.
Working individually or in teams, students created products aimed at solving real-world problems. This year’s inventions ranged from personal cosmetic solutions to pollution-fighting devices. Participants developed and tested prototypes, documented their progress in journals, and presented their inventions for feedback from Columbus City Schools staff.
“We are trying to get them to be creative problem solvers and give them an opportunity to have some choice in their learning,” said Carmen Tarbill, gifted consultant for the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio.
Students who receive strong feedback and fit the available competition slots advance to the Regional Ohio Invention Competition, where they are judged by the Ohio Invention League based on a pitch video. Top performers move on to the State Competition in Columbus, hoping to qualify for the RTX Invention Convention U.S. Nationals in Michigan.
National qualifiers compete for awards, cash prizes, scholarships, and potential patent opportunities.
At the CCS Invention Convention, each student received a certificate and feedback form to help refine their projects for future competitions.
Lovie Debnam, a gifted intervention specialist at Ridgeview and Ecole Kenwood, accompanied 27 students to the event. For her, it was a full-circle moment, as her daughter had participated in the competition years ago.
To prepare, both schools formed after-school clubs late last year. Debnam noted that participation required dedication from both students and parents, given the extensive effort involved in designing a concept, developing a prototype, and preparing a presentation.
“The students who do this well have to be personally motivated and be able to balance their schoolwork on top of this,” Debnam said.
For Ridgeview sixth graders Mohammad Amiri and Haroon Takal, their motivation stemmed from a family dilemma. Takal comes from a household with three brothers, while Amiri has three brothers and a sister. With so many family members, shoes were in high demand.
Their solution? The 3-in-1 Shoe, a convertible design that can function as a shoe, slipper, or boot by adjusting the zippers.
“It was going to cost too much for each person, so if we combine them all in one, it saves money,” Amiri said.
Debra Gill, a gifted intervention specialist at Weinland Park, Berwick Alternative (K-8), South Mifflin STEM, and Broadleigh Elementary, was thrilled to see increased student participation this year. Last year, she and her five students were the only attendees from her schools.
Gill, who taught middle school science for 13 years, recalled a time before the pandemic when the CCS Invention Convention was a must-attend event. Previously, 80 to 90 students gathered at the Columbus College of Art & Design to present their projects. She remains committed to growing the event once again.
For her, fostering creativity and innovation is key.
“There are some great minds in this room, and these students have amazing ideas,” Gill said.
The CCS Invention Convention is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of young minds tackling real-world problems with creativity and determination. From adaptive scissors to multifunctional shoes, these students are proving that innovation knows no boundaries. With the support of dedicated educators, parents, and mentors, their ideas have the potential to shape the future.
GOAL-ORIENTED GROWTH, CCS PE TEACHERS TRAIN WITH COLUMBUS CREW
March 19, 2025 — Elementary physical education (PE) teachers across Columbus City Schools laced up their sneakers and hit the court at South High School for a high-energy training session with the Columbus Crew.
“Today is really meant to empower PE teachers,” said Community Relations Director at the Columbus Crew, Stephanie Cedeño. “[The Crew wants to] provide tools for them to put soccer in their PE classrooms with drills and skills that we know align with the state national standards. Skills that are tried and tested with our Crew coaches that we work with.”
Focused on goal-oriented growth, PE teachers from twelve schools kicked off the day by learning the fundamentals of soccer—dribbling, passing, and movement—before diving into more advanced techniques.
With each drill and demonstration, teachers gained the skills and confidence to bring the excitement of the game to their students, ensuring soccer becomes a lasting part of physical education across the District.
“I know the students will be excited about playing soccer,” said Como and Ohio Avenue Elementary Physical Education Teacher Karen Gynn. [Now that I have] background on foot position, footwork, putting the toe down, and etcetera, I can teach the kids with that and it'll flow within the lessons.”
Throughout their session, educators focused on the mechanics of the game, mastering footwork, strategy, and official rules. The Crew’s trainers guided them through step-by-step instructions on engagingly introducing soccer, ensuring students of all skill levels could participate. By the afternoon, educators ran full practice sessions, gaining the confidence to bring structured, high-energy lessons to their schools.
“It was a pleasure being part of the professional development day today,” said Academy Director at Columbus Crew, Daniel Lock. “Seeing the enthusiasm of the teachers who will be executing the curriculum. We hope that implementing the curriculum and bringing soccer into the schools will grow the love of the game at grassroots level and one day we’ll hopefully see some of these children in the Columbus Crew Academy.”
The professional development training is the first step toward launching the Soccer in Schools program. The initiative aims to introduce students to the game at an early age, creating a love for soccer while promoting teamwork and physical activity. For the teachers, the event is about learning new skills and refining their techniques, sharing best practices, and enjoying a day of collaboration.
“It's great to have a partnership with the Columbus Crew,” said Ecole Kenwood Physical Education Teacher Bryan Ferres. “Having the ability to have them come in and demonstrate and write a curriculum is a great thing for Columbus City Schools. [We are excited to] get the students excited about soccer.”
Through partnerships like this, Columbus City Schools continues investing in staff and students, ensuring physical education remains an important part of the learning experience. By working with the Columbus Crew, the District sets the stage for students to build confidence, stay active, and dream big. CCS is committed to providing opportunities that inspire growth, teamwork, and success in the classroom or field.

Making Plans For The Summer?
Click below for a list of many of the different summer programs, camps, internships, volunteer hours, and employment opportunities for grades PreK-12, special education/adaptive, gifted, and English language learners.
Summer EBT Application Available Now
What is Summer EBT?
The Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer Program for Children (Summer EBT or SUN Bucks) began in 2024 and continues for 2025. Summer EBT/SUN Bucks provides grocery benefits to low-income families with school-aged children when schools are closed for the summer. Summer EBT benefits will either be loaded to a household’s Ohio Direction Card, or a benefit card will be sent in the mail to each eligible child. Families can use the money to buy food during the summer at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other authorized retailers. Families will receive a one-time benefit of $120 for each eligible child and participation will not affect children or families’ immigration status.
How do I know if my child is eligible to receive Summer EBT/Sun Bucks and how do I apply?
Many families will get Summer EBT/SUN Bucks automatically if they are getting other benefits, but some families may need to apply for the program. If your household already participates in SNAP, OWF, or if income eligible and receiving Medicaid benefits, your child will automatically be enrolled to receive summer benefits. You do not need to fill out an application or take any further action.
What if I am not automatically enrolled, but I believe that my child might be eligible?
Your household can apply for Summer EBT/SUN Bucks directly at sebt.ohio.gov When applying, you will be asked to provide your child’s name, school, date of birth, address, and some additional details. You will also be asked to report your household’s income. You will not need to provide any other documents or information including social security number, proof of citizenship, or pay stubs to apply.
