SPANISH SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL
Week of August 23 - August 27
From the Desk of Principal Tammy Hart
Dear Spanish Springs HS Parents and Guardians,
On behalf of the staff at Spanish Springs High School, I would like to welcome all new and returning students to the 2021-2022 school year. As we plan for a new beginning with having all students return to full in-person learning in the building, our focus will still be to ensure that students are connected and provided quality instruction. Last school year was challenging for students and staff adjusting to the varied learning models. There was a lot learned through this process; however, I so appreciate the efforts of the students, staff and parents who perservered through these challenging times due to Covid-19. Despite the challenging time like we have never experienced before, we are excited about the opportunity of teaching and working with your child for the upcoming school year.
Sincerely,
Tammy Hart, Principal

SSHS Dress Code
We are excited to welcome students back to school and need your help to ensure students adhere to the Washoe County School District Dress Code. Students are not allowed to show skin above the mid-thigh, including ripped jeans and shorts, as well as in the stomach and chest area. Students who wear clothing with plunging necklines and exposed midriffs will be dress coded and lose important instructional time with their teachers. Please make sure the content on the clothes are also school appropriate—nothing promoting violence, sex, or illegal drug use.
Transportation
- You can then click on the “E-Link” for bus schedules and/or the “Find Your Zoned School” link to find out what school zone you are in.
Parents are encouraged to contact the district transportation dispatch at (775) 337- 7769 for questions pertaining to their child/children’s bus transportation needs.
Busses Courtesy Rides
Please be aware that WCSD Transportation does not offer courtesy bus rides. Bus capacity is limited and cannot honor courtesy bus rides. Thank you.
Student Drop Off Procedure
Parents and Guardians: As we continue to improve our safety protocols at SSHS, we ask for your help when dropping off your students. The parent drop-off location is not located at the Main Entrance roundabout. We ask that you follow the signs toward the Parent Drop-off Zone on the north side of the building, near the cafeteria. All drop offs should occur in this roundabout which offers an easy, safe exit to Eagle Canyon Drive. Please do not stop/park at the front entrance of the school to drop off your students between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM. This creates traffic issues and significant safety concerns. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe while on campus.

Attendance Policy
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Spanish Springs HS follows all WCSD Attendance Policies and Procedures.
In Summary:
If your student(s) is sick, please keep your student(s) home from school.
Parent/guardian must call or email the school each day their student(s) is
absent to verify the student’s absence on that day to ensure the child's
safety. Please call the SSHS Office at 425-7733 to verify student absences.
Students who miss 10% or more of the total number of class periods for any reason during a semester (high school) for each course will be chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism rules are set by State and Federal guidelines.
Students will not be retained or fail a course (high school) based on attendance. However, students who miss 10% or more of class periods for any course that meets in a semester will be chronically absent in that course(s).
If the student must miss an entire class period for any reason, it is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to see that a written/verbal verification is provided to the school prior to, during, or within three days of an absence. Failure to do so within three days of the student's return to school will result in the absence being coded as Unverified (AUK).
The Health Department Excluded Distance Learning OR Contact Tracing (HDED or HDCT) code is used when a school has been notified by Washoe County Health Department or Washoe County School District that a student is excluded from school but is able to work on Temporary Distance Learning for the length of the exclusion. Students are to attend Temporary Distance Learning daily and complete work assigned. Students will check-in daily on MS Teams through the Daily Agenda. If a student is unable to work due to health reasons or the student chooses not to work or communicate with the teacher daily, the student will be marked HDE. The HDED and HDCT codes do not count toward chronic absenteeism. HDE does count toward chronic absenteeism.
Street Passes
· The office will need a note from a parent/guardian requesting a street pass for their child.
· The note must state the reason and time the student needs to leave school.
· If a parent walks in or calls without prior notification, please be prepared to wait 10 to 15 minutes or longer for the student to be retrieved from his or her class.
Off Campus Guidelines
· Any student scheduled to have an Off-Campus class MUST have an Off-Campus sticker on the back of their Spanish Springs High School Identification Card.
· The Off-Campus stickers are available in the Counseling Office.
· Students are required to leave school as soon as their class is over. They may not stay for nutrition break or lunch break.
· Students should not return to school. If you have an activity after school, you must remain off school grounds until the last bell has rung.
· The expectation is that students leave campus for their off-campus period and do not return during school hours. If there is a reason a student must stay on campus during their off-campus period, then the student must sign in at the Library or the Career Center. All campus expectations apply including cumulative tardies, the use of hall passes, and not lingering in the hallways during class time.
· If you have morning off-campus, you should not come to school until the end of the period. If for some reason you have to arrive early, you must check into the Student Relations Office and sign in. You will then remain in the Library or Career Center until passing time.
· Having an Off-Campus is a privilege and failure to comply with the rules will result in a class being added to your schedule, and the Off-Campus privileges taken away.
Make-Up Work
Make-up work must be provided for any absence, but it is the student’s responsibility to request the make-up work in advance or on the first day s/he returns to class. Because it is impossible to make-up some in-class assignments, coursework of a similar nature may be given. It is the student’s responsibility to turn in all make-up class work at the designated deadline. Failure to complete the make-up work within the designated deadline will result in no credit received for the make-up work.
Students will have the number of days absent plus one to complete missed make up work or concepts missed beginning on the day the teacher provides the missed assignments to the student. Teachers must provide missed make-up work or concepts missed within two days of the student’s return to class.

Registration
Students’ class schedules will be available on Infinite Campus. We would like to encourage students to view and print them out for the first day of school. Students will be on a “C” schedule on the first day of school. The “C-Day” schedule means that they will be attending every class period on August 9th (zero, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Once students begin classes, teachers will inform students what school supplies are needed for their classes. The subsequent days, students will follow our traditional A-Day, B-Day, rotating block schedule.

NIAA and WCSD Athletic Guidance
Based on information received from the NIAA late last week, the District will follow their guidance that requires all unvaccinated participants (students, coaches, associated staff, and volunteers) participating in football to test weekly for COVID-19. Additionally, those participating in other athletics or activities and traveling out of the District need to be tested for COVID before travel. Please look at page 3 of the NIAA guidance for COVID-19 testing and mitigation guidelines. Additionally, page six of the guidance shows a flow chart of how testing is determined.
Following this guidance, if your student is unvaccinated and participating in football, they will need to take a weekly COVID test.
If your student is unvaccinated and part of a sport or activity leaving Washoe county, they will need to test before traveling that week.
The school will be notifying you if your student needs to test. If you do not wish to use the school district COVID testing services, you can choose another provider. However, the school district will not be able to reimburse families for using an outside provider. Additionally, home tests and unofficial results will not be allowed to prove a negative COVID test.
Whether through the district COVID testing program, or an alternate provider, a negative COVID test will be required for eligibility. Students who present a positive COVID test will need to follow exclusion protocols set up by the Washoe County Health District and the CDC.
If additional changes to this guidance and the district procedures related to testing of student-athletes or mitigation practices occur, all families will be notified. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we review and update our processes to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our students and staff.
