Friday, May 21, will be a full day of instruction with the school day ending at 2:35 pm. Monday, May 24, through Wednesday, May 26 will be half days with school ending at 11:20 am each day. FINAL EXAM INFORMATION

Finals for ALL LEARNERS both IN PERSON and REMOTE, will occur synchronously.

For example, if a sophomore student has English II in their schedule during 2nd period, their English exam will be on May 24, 2021, from 9:24 a.m. - 11:20 a.m. according to the schedule above. If your student is unable to take the exam at the scheduled time, they will need to schedule a make-up exam with their teacher. No exams for students will be given prior to May 21, 2021. Any student, REMOTE or IN PERSON who misses the scheduled exam at the scheduled time, will be allowed a make-up exam without penalty. A zero will be entered into the gradebook but will be replaced with the exam grade once the exam has been made up. If the student does not arrange to make-up the exam, then the zero will remain in the gradebook.

SPRING FINAL EXAM EXEMPTION POLICY

All students, 9th through 12th, are eligible for final exam exemptions in the Spring Semester. Students must meet the criteria and the discipline requirement listed below.

1. Students must maintain an 85-100 class average for the semester (18-weeks)

2. Any student that has served ISS/SAC, DAEP, or OSS while enrolled in a course during the semester of the final exam is not eligible for a final exam exemption for that course.

3. A student granted a final exam exemption must still attend that class during the final exam period in person or virtually. Students checking in remotely must log on during the synchronous exam time and submit the exemption assignment posted in the Canvas course for that class. If a student that does not attend in person does not complete the online exemption activity during the synchronous time, they will receive a zero (0) for the final exam and then must schedule a time to make up the exam.

4. To ensure that all students have the opportunity to complete their exams in a distraction-free environment, the attendance office will not be doing early checkouts for students on campus during exam periods. Parents and students should plan accordingly so that students remain in their exam period the entire duration of the exam period if coming in person (both mid-term and final exams).

In Conroe ISD, we encourage all students to read over the summer in order to enrich learning and provoke thought. Summer reading strengthens reading skills, increases academic achievement, fosters a love for reading, and empowers students to become life-long learners.

Additionally, students who enroll in an Honors, Dual Credit, or Advanced Placement English course are expected to engage in summer reading as it prepares students for the upcoming school year and creates an initial common framework for classroom discussion and instruction.

REQUIRED: The Poisonwood Bible - Barbara Kingsolver.

• While our focus for the first semester will be pre-17th century literature, your summer reading is a more modern piece. However, this work contains many allusions to the Hebrew and Greek Testaments of The Bible. We will use these allusions as entry points to begin our analysis of ancient works.
• It is important for you to read this book. I will assign you a major-grade essay over The Poisonwood Bible after the first three-week progress report of the first quarter. You will work on this essay over several weeks, submitting it after the second three-week progress report of the second quarter.

REQUIRED: Outliers: The Story of Success - Malcolm Gladwell

• Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"—the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? (from Amazon)
• You will be assessed for understanding of this text as well as using it for your entrance diagnostic essay during the first two weeks of school. While reading, look closely at what claims the author makes and how he defends them throughout the chapters and book as a whole. Annotating with this objective in mind is highly encouraged and will be beneficial for your writing assignment.

REQUIRED: Read and annotate Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

English IV AP

REQUIRED: You are required to read and annotate TWO titles this summer. You will be quizzed over your reading of these titles early in the school year. I recommend reading both titles as close to the beginning of the school year as possible.

• Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri (This is a short story collection of nine stories. Please note that one of the stories in the collection is also titled “Interpreter of Maladies,” so be careful not to read only that story and miss the eight others.)

• American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang (graphic novel)

RECOMMENDED: It is strongly recommended that you have read the following titles prior to entering English IV AP, as much of the material we cover in the first semester will be easier to comprehend if you have done so. These are likely titles you studied in earlier grades, but if you did not, now is a good time to read them. If you have already read them, you do not need to reread them; remembering the basics will serve you well. If you are unable to read them, it will not hinder your ability to be successful in the course in any way.

AP PHYSICS:

Both AP Physics 1 (juniors) and AP Physics C (seniors) have a summer assignment to complete. Both assignments require students to be manually enrolled in an online Canvas course. If you are enrolled in either of these courses for the 2021 - 2022 school year, but have not yet been enrolled in the Canvas course please contact Ms. Hamel at lhamel@conroeisd.net.

The Woodlands High School Graduation - Class of 2021

Stream Ceremony. Congratulations Class of 2021! Please Note: No bags or purses are allowed at this event. Out of respect to all graduates and their families, no blow-horns, noise makers or balloons will be allowed. As a reminder, no smoking, to include vaping, is allowed at CISD events. Tickets will be distributed through your school.

Additionally, all Graduates, both in person and virtual students are required to attend Graduation practice the morning of the event. Seniors will meet at TWHS at 8:30 AM on the Bus Ramp. They will receive their tickets for Graduation and instructions for the event at practice. We will load the buses and leave TWHS at 8:45 and return around 11:00. As a reminder, Graduates are not allowed to decorate their caps. Graduate dress for Males: dress slacks, a white or light shirt is recommended with a tie, and dress shoes. Graduate dress for Women: dresses or nice slacks and dress shoes. Be careful of high heels as there are stairs at each end of the stage. No flip flops or tennis shoes. The event will be live streamed. USBs will be available for purchase on the School Web Store for $12.00 the day after.

Senior Class of 2021: We are getting close to the end of the year. Please make sure that your students are continuing to push themselves in all of their courses. Our counseling staff wants to make sure that our seniors stay on track to graduate in these final weeks. If you have any concerns about graduation and/or classes, please encourage your students to visit with their teachers and their counselors. We hope to see everyone at graduation on May 25, 2021!

Summer School Registration: Summer school registration is underway on our campus. If your student is interested in taking an accelerated course such as health, government, etc., you can go ahead and reach out to your student’s counselor. In addition, if your student needs summer school for credit recovery, registration for credit recovery has also begun. However, many parents and students wait until after final exams to register for credit recovery. The final deadline to pre-register your student for summer school is Wednesday June 2nd by 2pm via your student’s counselor. The final opportunity to register for summer school will be at an in-person registration event at TWHS on Thursday June 3rd from 4 – 7pm. Quick Reminder: If your child is able to average the first semester failing grade with the second semester passing grade together for an overall grade of 70 or higher, summer school may not be needed. However, if a student fails second semester, the two semester averages cannot be averaged together for credit recovery. All students have to pass the second semester in order to get second semester credit.

The TWHS Counseling Team wishes everyone to have a great summer and we will see all of the underclassmen when we return on August 11, 2021!

We are available in the clinic until May 27th, and will return for the next school year on August 4th.

Checklist for Parents/Guardians

---For graduating seniors or summer movers, you may request a copy of your child’s vaccine record to be emailed to you or printed for pickup (we do not submit them to colleges/universities). If your child has a Conscientious Objector Exemption on file and is leaving TWHS, you or your student may pick up the original form before May 27th.

---Parents/guardians need to check out any medication that was left in the clinic this year by 12:00 on May 25th, or it will be discarded. We are not allowed to store it over the summer, or send it home with students. If you plan to come on one of the half days during exam week, please be aware that we may only be available while students are on campus; we recommend calling first. The clinic at the main campus can be reached at 936-709-1076, and the 9th grade campus clinic is 832-592-8209.

Please notify the clinic if you do not plan to pick up your child’s medication, and wish for it to be discarded.

---If your child has a medical condition such as asthma, severe allergies, diabetes, migraines, or seizures, please remember that doctor’s orders must be renewed each school year, and schedule an appointment with your child’s doctor for this summer. If you need new forms for next year, we are happy to provide you with them.

---If you have been notified that your child has a vaccine or new Conscientious Objector Exemption due over the summer, please be aware they will not be allowed to start school in August without first submitting proof that the requirement has been completed.

MEET IN THE MIDDLE: Meet in the Middle will resume meetings full of fun activities, friendship, and sports training in the fall. Meet in the Middle brings students with and without intellectual disabilities together for connection and support. Many of our students participate in Special Olympics, and there are volunteer opportunities at these exciting events. Our meetings are from 2:45-3:30pm on the second and fourth Mondays of every month. If you are a sophomore or junior looking for leadership opportunities, we would love to have your talents as an officer for the club. TWHS ROBOTICS: Join TWHS Robotics now! Spring training has begun - all interested students are welcome to stop by a Robotics meeting and check it out - no previous experience necessary. We are currently finishing up our competition season and beginning to train new team members for next year - we are also preparing to move into our brand-new lab! FBLA: We had 20 active members of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). We had 12 compete at the area level, 8 compete at the state level, and 4 who will compete in June at the National level. We elected our President for the 2021-2022 school year--Sarah Rodee. Our other officers will be elected in September. We had 8 students letter based on their participation in the organization. Overall, we had a productive year.

SCUBA CLUB: Our end-of-year dive meetup is at Blue Lagoon Saturday, May 29th, at 8am. All certified divers (and certified family members) are welcome to attend—let club faculty sponsor LtCol McMartin know you’re coming by emailing cmcmartin@conroeisd.net! TEXTBOOK AND CALCULATOR RETURN:

As we are approaching the end of this School Year 2020-2021. Students are responsible to return all their borrowed textbooks and calculators to avoid any lost textbook charges or penalties.

If the borrowed textbook(s) or calculator is Lost or Not available, the student must pay for the missing book and/or calculator.

For our Seniors, we will be receiving textbooks and calculators in the Bookroom all throughout the school day beginning from May 10th - May 17th. All borrowed items distributed to Seniors must be return by May 21, 2021. Students who are not cleared of textbooks and calculators will not receive their Graduation Tickets or Diploma.

For our Sophomores and Juniors, we will be receiving textbooks and calculators in the Bookroom all throughout the school day beginning May 10 - May 21. All borrowed items distributed to Sophomores and Juniors must be return by May 26, 2021. Students who are not cleared of textbooks and calculators will have their parking spot and schedules held and they will be unable to checkout textbooks or calculators in the Fall of 2021.

Freshmen Textbook Return - we will be receiving textbooks in the Grade Level Office all throughout the school day beginning May 10. All borrowed items distributed must be return by May 26, 2021. Students who are not cleared of textbooks will have their schedules held and they will be unable to checkout textbooks in the Fall of 2021.

SENIOR CAMPUS LIBRARY: All library books were due on Monday, May 17th. All chrome books, chargers and hot spots checked out to students this year are due after the student's last final.

CTE CERTIFICATIONS: Six hundred and nineteen Certification Exams have been taken and passed this year by CTE Students. In various CTE Classes we had 148 students passed Microsoft Word, 132 students passed Microsoft Excel, 16 students passed Microsoft Outlook, 136 students passed Microsoft PowerPoint, 12 students passed Microsoft Access, 20 students passed Microsoft Word Expert, 5 passed Microsoft Excel Expert, 2 passed QuickBooks Online-US Version, 33 passed Entrepreneurship and Small Business, 6 passed Communication Skills for Business, 1 passed IC3 Digital Literacy, 1 passed Adobe Illustrator, 6 passed Adobe Premier Pro, 11 passed Autodesk: Revit for Architecture, and 90 passed Autodesk: Auto Cad. CAREER PREP NEWS: The Class of 2021 continued the tradition of excellence in hours worked our paid, work-based instruction program. The TOP Producer Award working 1,324 hours and in-person learning is senior, George Fernandez Torres (Mercedes Benz of The Woodlands). Rounding out the top five were seniors: Samantha Chavez, Fred Garrigos, Lauren Coonrad, Hunter Britt and Gustavo Herrera. Every student in Career Prep met the 540 hours criteria with 100% meeting production goals. JROTC: The Corps Yearbook will cost $25 and is payable via the Booster Club; see our JROTC online newsletter at https://www.smore.com/3fsqx for details on how to pay. We will not receive the yearbooks until after the last day of school; we will arrange a pickup date/time when they arrive, or alternatively you can receive it during class in August.

We have a JROTC Spirit Day at MOD Pizza in the Indian Springs Village Center (6777 Woodlands Parkway, Suite 314) on the last day of school (Wednesday the 26th, a half day). Celebrate the completion of a crazy year by having pizza with your fellow cadets! The Spirit Day runs 10:30am -10:30pm, so you can have lunch with your friends after school, then bring your parents for dinner! Be sure to mention you’re supporting JROTC so our Booster Club gets a portion of your purchase!

Thirty eight of our cadets will attend our Cadet Leadership Course along with Oak Ridge JROTC the first week of June. You have one week for final preparation—make the most of it and you’ll do great!

The TWHS PTO would like to say thank you to everyone for all of your support this year. The year looked very different, however our amazing TWHS parents remained the same very generous supporters be it with their time or donations. We could not have done what we did this year without all of you.

For those of you with Graduating Seniors, we wish your children the very best on the next leg of their journey. The Class of 2021 started their Freshman year with Hurricane Harvey, endured a complete shut down of life as they knew it in March of their Junior year and here they are Graduating as things as begin to resume back to normal. We are so proud of this amazing group of kids, they are clearly destined for great things after all they have been through.
