High School Registration Update
To: 8th grade families
I would like to update information related to moving to the 7 period day for the 24-25 school year.
Students have begun hearing about these changes and I apologize for a gap in timely communications home.
East is moving from a 6 to 7 period day, students have time to take additional courses.
This is a great benefit and one we are excited to bring to East HS next Fall.
However, this also creates a significant need to offer additional courses and an adjustment to required credits for graduation.
New credit and course additions have moved forward starting next Fall.
Please continue to scroll through the information shared below.
To be ready for September, students currently in grades 8-10 have begun to make either 1 or 2 adjustments to their prior registration
1. With a new grade level, semester long requirement being added as displayed below, students have begun to identify which single semester course they choose to swap
*Important Note-Students filling their schedule with yearlong, sequential electives may see their counselor to request moving their grade level required course to a later year.
These are uncommon but would include being a part of multiple advanced Music, World Language, or CTE year long courses.
2. Students may also choose to add a newly offered elective from the courses below.
If so, students would make further updates to their prior registration during their grade level meeting at school.
*Important Note-Students filling their schedule with yearlong, sequential electives may see their counselor to request moving their grade level required course to a later year.

For those of you who pre-ordered a yearbook, you will receive yours on Monday during WIN.
Yearbooks will be for sale during lunches the last week of school. It is first come first serve, if you did not already order one. We will also be offering autograph books to those without yearbooks during yearbook signing time on the last day of school.
Please bring cash or checks made payable to Ordean East Middle School. They often sell out, so if you would like one please be sure to bring money.
Social Studies Curriculum Survey
Duluth Public Schools' Social Studies Curriculum Committees are in the process of reviewing the current social studies curriculum in order to meet the 2021 Minnesota K-12 Social Studies Standards to be implemented during the 2026-2027 school year. To aid in this process, they are looking for feedback on the social studies curriculum from families and community members. If you are a district family member or community member, we would appreciate it if you took a moment to provide any feedback on the curriculum using this link. The survey will be open until June 15th. Thank you in advance!

Real Talk Students Build Trust and Community
On April 26th, our "Real Talk Student Advocates" participated in a training known as the "Character Challenge" for both our current 8th grade members AND our incoming 7th grade members. The training was conducted by a group of trained professionals that go on the road to provide a variety of activities and training to middle and high school age students. Ms. Paschen and Mr. Muellenbach also ran portions of the training.
The main points of focus that they tailored this training to were:
- Integrity and Inclusiveness
- Leadership Styles
- Advocacy
Students were asked to get out of their comfort zones and interact with people outside of their normal social circles. Students had to gain confidence, be comfortable in who they are, and let themselves be vulnerable. This is something extremely difficult to do, yet invaluable when done correctly. As they navigated this experience, students worked as teams to accomplish different goals that circled back to the main points outlined above. In the end, students shared that they learned a lot and had a great time doing so!
Here is what the trainer shared about the students:
"I am writing you to say what a wonderful experience it was working with student leaders from Ordean.... the students in the room were prepared for what we did. There was a value of SEL that was present. These 7th and 8th graders were locked in emotionally and mentally throughout the day. I could not be more impressed. Without question, these students performed better than any middle school I have ever facilitated and quite possibly better than ANY group I have worked with. A huge tip of the cap to your teachers and a big thanks for the opportunity to visit Ordean last week."
