Four Winds Daunting Defenses for April/May
Students in Pre-K through 4th grade have been learning that plants need defenses too, for protection from the many animals that feed upon them. Plants can't run away or hide but they have evolved a diverse armory of useful adaptations for fending off herbivores. Nearly all animals have predators of one kind or another, and eluding capture usually means running away, hiding, or both. But when avoidance fails and the predator gets too near, most animals still have an effective last line of dense. Ask your students what defense a puffer fish uses. What about a worm? A toad? How about a rose bush? Did you know the bark of a black cherry tree has a defense?
Mrs Glidewell's 1st grade class exploring the woods to find their own examples of defense. The most exciting find was a red back salamander. Salamanders can drop a piece of their tail off if caught by a predator, the tail is then later able to regrow!
If you would like to be a Four Winds volunteer next year please reach out to our volunteer coordinator Sabrina Graham at sabrinagraham2@gmail.com. Workshops and lessons begin in September.
