Happy Friday Hawkins,
It seems so crazy that this is the last newsletter before Spring Break. It has been a fun week here, between all of the families coming in as mystery readers, and the fun of St. Patrick’s Day. It was a packed week! We had a wonderful STEM night. Thank you so much to all of the parents who made this event possible, and a special thank you to the McGinnis family for being a part of this night as well as the NHS students from Brighton High School. Next week, we will have our 3rd grade music performances as well as an author visit, so we will be busy right up until the break. I did want to take a minute to remind everyone of the process when you have an issue on the bus. Transportation is a sub contracted service, so they handle their own investigations and consequences. When you have an issue on the bus, your first step should always be contacting transportation so that they can watch video and do an investigation. Consequences will come directly from them. I never mind if you also give me a heads up, so that I can keep an eye on it at school, and follow up with you so that you get resolution to your issue.

News From STEAM
During STEAM, 1st and 2nd graders used Scratch Jr. to complete a coding unit. The unit culminated in a final coding design challenge. 1st graders planned, coded and revised a retelling of a nursery rhyme. 2nd graders created a game using arrows for the player to control the main character. Inclusion Spirit Week
March 21st is World Down Syndrome day, which is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. To expand on this date and to celebrate inclusion of all students, we would like to have an "Inclusion Spirit Week" from March 18-22 (the week before spring break). The special "days" would include:
Monday, March 18: Acceptance of Self and Others - Come as you are! Pajama Day
Tuesday, March 19: Diversity - Be a part of the team! Jersey Day
Wednesday, March 20: Disabilities - Show your individual super power! Dress Like a Superhero Day
Thursday, March 21: World Down Syndrome Day - Rock Your Socks! Crazy Socks Day (The idea was created because chromosomes are shaped “like socks” and people with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome. People all over the world wear colorful/attractive/crazy socks on WDSD to get noticed.)

Celebrate Youth Arts Month at the Brighton District Library!
Elementary Art Exhibit opens THIS Friday, March 8th and will be on display until April 5th! Come and see the amazing collection of artwork from artists at Hawkins and the other 3 elementary schools!

KID’S HEART CHALLENGE
We will be having our annual Kid’s Heart Challenge campaign. Your child will be bringing home an
envelope this week for this event’s fund raising campaign. Your child does not have to fundraise to
participate in the event. All the information for the event will be on the envelope. We will be having our
event 3/18– 3/21 and it will take place during their PE class. The money will be due the week after Spring Break. Last year we raised close to $10,000! Our goal this year is to exceed $10,000.

Lost and Found
Hawkins lost and found is overflowing! There are coats, hats, gloves, mittens, and shoes. If your child is missing any of these items, please stop in and take a look. The lost and found located in the Hawkins cafeteria. Any items left by March 21st will be donated. Thank you for your help!
Medication at School
A quick reminder about the board policy regarding medication: All medication including over-the-counter medication (i.e. Tylenol, Motrin, TUMS, cough drops, etc.) must have a MEDICAL AUTHORIZATION FORM. This form requires both the parent's and the medical provider's signature. Without both signatures, we cannot give medication to your student. Also, the school cannot provide this medication. News From the Nurse
Just In Case Clothes
Please make sure your child has an extra set of clothes in their backpack and/or locker in case of accidents or emergencies (i.e. bathroom accidents, playground mishaps, lunchroom spills, ripped or torn clothes, etc.). We do not have extra clothes to lend out. An extra set here at school saves parents an extra trip to Hawkins during the school day. We appreciate your help!!!
Reporting An Absence on the Attendance Line
If your child is going to be absent, please call the Hawkins attendance Line (810-299-3900 then press 2). Please state your child's name, teacher, date of absence and reason for the absence (type of illness, doctor appointment, vacation etc). If your child has been diagnosed with a specific ailment (COVID, strep throat, pink eye, influenza, chicken pox) please state that in the voicemail message. If your child has not been diagnosed with a specific ailment but is having specific symptoms please let us know the symptoms your child is experiencing. Hawkins appreciates your help!
Parent Connect
Parent Connect a web-based application that allow parents/guardians to view information for your child's current school year. Logging into Parent Connect will enable you to see your child's placement (date to be determined), report card, and lunch account. In addition, parents/guardians can add or change emergency contacts. Please click on the link for more information.
Parent Connect Reported Absences
A new feature in Parent Connect will allow you to enter your student’s absence. Simply log into parent connect and click on the link Report Absence. The Report Absence link will open a screen for you to complete. If you have more than one student check the name of the student for whom an absence is being submitted. Add the applicable dates. If you check the All Day flag attendance will be submitted for the am and pm periods. If you do not check the All Day flag times must be entered and attendance will be submitted for whichever periods meet during the time range (based on period schedule).
Email, Phone Number, and Address Changes
If you need to change a contact phone number or email address you can do so through Parent. Connect at https://www.brightonk12.com/Page/144
If you do not know your Parent Connect login information, please follow the instructions on the Brighton Area Schools website.
PLEASE NOTE: Address changes CANNOT be completed through Parent Connect. Address changes must be completed by filling out a change of address form along with 3 copies of proof of residency. Details are listed on the change of address form which is available by clicking on the link below. Since in person drop off is not an option at this time, forms can be scanned and emailed to samanij@brightonk12.com
