Maize South High School
A message from Principal Ms. Becky Sailor
Greetings Maize South Parents and Families!
The recent temperatures have been a barrier, but fall sports and activities are in full swing. In the past 10 days our athletic teams have begun competition, many clubs have had their first meetings, and fall play tryouts are underway. Thank you for your support as we begin a new school year. I hope the Labor Day weekend provided a bit of relaxation for everyone.
Our clerical team at Maize South interacts with students, parents, and our community all day every day. We have an amazing clerical team and many new names and faces in the past year. Our team is in the North Office and the South Office. I would like to introduce you to our clerical team and welcome some of our new members of the team to the Maverick community:
Christina Black - Counseling Secretary
Stephanie Brooks - Discipline Secretary
Kerri Bruggeman - In School Support Para
Ivanna Rodriguez - Registrar
Madison Schmidt - Communications Secretary
Taryn Scott - Finance/Athletic Secretary
Suzanne Sullard - Attendance Secretary
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, September 28th from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Teachers will be in their classrooms for in person conferences. Students, parents, and guardians are invited to meet with teachers to discuss student progress. Due to conferences, students will not have school on Thursday, September 28th or Friday, September 29th.
In the August newsletter I shared the invitation for parents who are interested in being part of the Maize South Site Council. I am including this information again since the first few weeks of a new year are at times overwhelming, and I want all parents to have the opportunity to be informed and involved. School Site Councils play an advocacy role for schools. It is a group of parents and staff who work together to advise the school on matters such as student learning, education programs, school improvement planning, and accreditation issues. The Maize South Site Council will meet once per quarter in the library at 6:00 pm. Site Council meetings are generally on a Monday and will be scheduled soon. If you are interested in being part of the MSHS Site Council, please fill out this interest form.
Parents and students are invited to use the Maize South website to keep up with the daily morning announcements students here each morning. The announcements are posted to the website for parents to have access to and for students who do not have MSHS campus courses during the first block. You may access the Morning Announcements by clicking on the School tab then looking in the FYI section. In addition to the morning announcements, all schedules and events are posted on the Maize South calendar.
Fall Homecoming will be quickly approaching as we look ahead to October. Homecoming week is October 2-7, with the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, October 7th.

College & Career Center
Greetings!
The College and Career office will once again kick off our year by hosting our annual fall College Career Fair on Monday, September 11th at the Maize Career Academy. Last year over 30 colleges were in attendance. This is a great opportunity for students and their parents to come out and talk with college representatives regarding the admission and financial aid process as well as to see what each school has to offer. In addition, several business representatives will be available to discuss future opportunities for students. These are wonderful opportunities and several businesses assist with paying for students' education.
The goal of the College & Career Center (C&CC), located in the South Office, is to provide a variety of resources for college and career planning. Students are invited to use the C&CC as a resource to help navigate the college planning and application process as well as explore various career opportunities. I am typically in the office Monday - Thursday; however, I am happy to set appointments to benefit parents who chose to attend a session with their students from 7 am to 7 pm. To schedule an appointment please email me at lbrown@usd266.com or call my direct line at 316.462.8007.
Upcoming events include:
College & Career Fair on Monday, September 11th. The event will be held at the Maize Career Academy located at 11700 W. 45th St. N. from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. We are asking each family to register for one of the three 45 minute arrival times. Attendance will not be limited; however, we feel the staggered arrival time is beneficial to all participants. College & Career representatives will be available to share program offerings, information regarding admissions, scholarships, as well as, discuss future career opportunities. Business partners will also be available to share information regarding future internship programs.

Maize South Hosts Fall Blood Drive Final Wednesday in September
Maize South students are on a mission to help save lives by taking part in the American Red Cross high school program!
Maize South will host its annual fall-semester blood drive Wednesday, September 27 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the small gym, and community members are welcome to schedule donation appointments on the Red Cross website at: https://rebrand.ly/rx3t63u
Each year, nearly 20% of the millions of blood donations made in the U.S. come from high school and college blood drives. Eligible students, their families, and local community members make a difference for cancer patients, accident and burn victims, and many other blood recipients
in Wichita and across the nation.
Giving blood at our on-campus blood drive also helps our students earn scholarships. We’re proud to take part in the American Red Cross High School Scholarship Program. Last spring, MSHS awarded two Blood Services Scholarships to graduating seniors Caleigh Hoshaw and Tiffany Wong.
For the September and February on-campus drives, student volunteers recruit donors, work check-in, staff the snacks and recovery area, and escort departing donors. In January 2023, the Red Cross recognized Maize South High School’s successful drives by naming the school a Premier Blood Partner.
This semester, senior Kate Quinton leads blood-drive efforts as president of the student volunteer club CACOW, the Community Action Club of Wichita. Faculty sponsor is Mark Bradshaw: mbradshaw@usd266.com

From the Attendance Office
If you need your student released during the school day, please contact the attendance office at 316-462-8000 as soon as possible so we can get a pass to them. The more advanced notice we have, the easier it will be to ensure your child is able to leave on time. Parents are strongly encouraged to call the school instead of coming into the building to have their student checked out. This will help reduce traffic through the front office. As defined in the BOE attendance policy, students have THREE school days to have a medical note turned into the office to excuse an absence.
School Year Reminders
- Because students are not allowed to bring balloons or glass items on the bus, the Maize school district will not be accepting any flower, candy, cookie, or balloon bouquet deliveries to students.
- If your student is going to be tardy to school, please call the office. They are allowed three parent excused 1st block tardies per year, after that they are subject to detention.
- When a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the parents to call the attendance office within 24 hours to verify the reason for the absence. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc., these visits won't count against your child's attendance. Medical notes can also be faxed to 462-8001.
- If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please call the office with the time your child needs to be released. They will receive a pass ahead of time and can check themselves out at the requested time. The exception to this, is lunch time. If you wish to check your student out for lunch, a parent must come in and sign the student out. Parents are not required to sign students back in.
- We have a "closed lunch" policy. Students will be expected to eat at school and NO OUTSIDE FOOD may be brought in or delivered.
- If your child is absent and will require homework, please email the teacher.
Thank you for your help with this. We appreciate it!

foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment. Students should be
studying the Kansas Driver Handbook and be ready to take a handbook test at the start of the
