A message from your principal!
Can you believe it’s the end of the First Quarter and we are already a week into the second quarter! With that in mind, parents, working along with teachers and students, are critical partners in helping their child or children achieve academic success. One important part of this commitment is elementary conference day on Tuesday, November 19th. If your child’s teacher has not done so already, he/she will be sending a letter home to schedule a time for you to discuss your child’s progress. I cannot overemphasize the importance of meeting with your child’s teacher. Research has shown that when the home school connection is strong, student’s chances of success increase dramatically.
Several weeks ago, our superintendent, Dr. Rogers sent a message to all BCPS stakeholders about American Education Week. I have included the message again in this newsletter. In the spirit of re-imagining just a week, Logan Elementary has already hosted several family events to build that home-school connection and we will have another family event in December. This year, we will have a visitation day where you will have an opportunity to visit your child’s classroom. The visitation day will be Thursday, November 21st. We will have one visitation time in the morning, 9:30-11:00 and another session in the afternoon, 2:15-3:45pm. The cafeteria does not have space for parents/guardians to eat lunch with their child. No visitation will occur during lunch. Attached to this newsletter is a form you can send into your child’s teacher to Pre-Raptor. Otherwise, all visitors must check in the front office with identification to receive a Raptor pass before visiting classrooms. Visitors must wear a badge while in the building.
Dr, Rogers Message: Baltimore County Public Schools will observe American Education Week 2024 from Monday, November 18, through Friday, November 22, with countywide and school-based activities.
During the week, many schools will set aside specific times for parents and caregivers to visit their children’s classrooms and/or attend special events. Activities planned by schools across the county include math and reading nights, book fairs, family dinners, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) showcases. The BCPS Parent University American Education Week webpage features links to classroom observation checklists as well as resources to help parents and caregivers prepare for upcoming conferences.
“In BCPS, we strive to live each school day with the spirit of American Education Week,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Myriam Rogers. “We are focused on making our schools even more inclusive and welcoming environments for both students and their families. As schools continue to develop additional year-round opportunities for family and community engagement, families may find that some schools are moving away from the focus on traditional classroom visitations during American Education Week. This is a shift toward even more meaningful and frequent connections with our families.”
Dr. Rogers continued, “Success for every child depends on a strong partnership among schools, families, and the community. Year-round, we encourage parents and caregivers to support their schools through their parent teacher organizations and by serving as volunteers and boosters. Community members are also welcome as volunteers, and businesses are encouraged to explore partnership opportunities.”
Thursday, November 21st: Classroom Visitation Day
9:30 am-11:00 am (classroom visitation)
and
2:15 pm-3:45 pm (classroom visitation)
Please Note: The cafeteria does not have space for all parents to eat lunch with their child. No visitation will occur during lunch.
Lastly, don’t forget to join the PTA. Our next meeting is November 12th at 4:30pm in the library.
Main Office Minutes
Please make sure you take the time to keep your students contact information and address up to date, stop in the office or call us and we will take care of the rest. Also please keep in mind that arrival and dismissal times are very busy for the main office. We ask that you be mindful when planning a trip to the office to handle student related matters. In addition, if you are planning to pick your student up for early dismissal please do so before 3:40pm. Students are still involved in instruction until 3:50pm and our goal is to lessen the distraction.
Community Center Business
From the Community School Facilitator:
Did you know that Logan Elementary has a community center? It is in the back of the building in trailer #4. If you are in need of food, cleaning supplies, books, clothing, or toiletries, please stop and see Mr. Little (Community School Facilitator). It is completely confidential. We are extremely excited and proud of the work we do with our students, families, and our wonderful community.
Thank you,
Jake Little, Community School Facilitator
Library Corner
Thank you, Logan Family, for a successful Scholastic Book Fair! It was wonderful to see so many students enjoy browsing and locating books that they were interested in. We will have another Scholastic Book Fair in the Spring...a BOGO...buy one get one! We can't wait!!
Our Little Free Library is OPEN! Please take the time to stop by and look at our new addition. You are welcome to take a book and read it! You can put in a book that you are finished reading so others can enjoy it or return the book when you are done reading it.
Logan students took part in a Book Tasting to see all the new books we have in our library and to try reading something new. If you don't like reading, Mr. Parker says "you haven't found the right book." Keep looking, we have so many amazing choices!
Lastly, please remember to return library books. Overdue notices are being sent home this week. Return the books when you are done reading them so others can read them too!
Have fun reading!!!

Thanksgiving Learning at Home
The holidays bring so many things into our lives which we hold special. They also bring extra time to spend with our families. Whether you are looking for things to fill the time, new traditions to start, or activities to enrich learning while your children are on break from school, we've put together 6 ways to learn at home during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Learning in the Kitchen
The kitchen is one of the most learning-rich rooms in any household. With opportunities for reading recipes, practicing procedural (recipe) writing, measuring, mixing, using basic math skills, etc., you can easily sneak in authentic and fun learning opportunities while you prepare meals for the holidays.
Sharing Traditions
While you're working together to create that special recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation, take time to discuss the special traditions that your family holds near and dear. Oral storytelling of traditions is a fantastic way for your child to practice and improve their listening comprehension skills. Additionally, sharing family traditions helps your child develop an understanding of their individual, family and larger culture.
Historical Significance
We've come a long way in understanding the historical truths of what Thanksgiving was and wasn't. Taking some time to share the historical context of this holiday can provide some important history lessons. If your children are older, you can deepen those conversations to discuss historical truths versus misrepresentations.
ParentsTogether.org offers some great tips and resources for having these conversations.
Spreading Gratitude
Significant to the Thanksgiving holiday, is the expression of gratitude towards others and even ourselves. Setting some time aside to write down or express those things in our life we are most thankful for can help your family build empathy and offer practice in reflection. Take the gratitudes to the next level by sharing them outloud or incorporating them into a visual craft. Having these moments to share can help strengthen speaking and active listening skills.
Thanksgiving Creativity
Have family members who love to get crafty? Spending time together while making thank-you cards, paper turkeys, decorated leaves and scarecrows, etc. can be a great way to bond. Additionally, crafting helps with fine motor skills, pattern recognition, problem solving, creative and critical thinking, etc. Following directions and building patience are also benefits of family craft times.
Playing Games
Any time there is uninterrupted time at home, bringing out the games can be a great way to keep busy, have some fun, and practice many important skills. Game play offers a variety of ways of learning including: reading, math, logic, prediction, social skills, and more.
In addition to the classic board games, there are many family fun game ideas you can find across the internet and social media.

Psych Says!
A word from our school Psychologist:
November 11-15th is National School Psychology Week. Ms. Reena Patel has been the Logan ES school psychologist for the past 4 years! Ms. Patel works hard to support our special education and student support teams by completing assessments and helping to support students with disabilities. She also works with students who may just need someone to talk to or families who are seeking support in school and with outside school agencies!
Ms. Patel is passionate about social, emotional learning and enjoys pushing into our classrooms to deliver Zones of Regulation and Yoga Lessons. She also loves supporting Logan at our community events, like face painting at our Hispanic Heritage Night or henna designs at our Multicultural Night.
If you are ever looking for Ms. Patel, you can catch her waving and saying good morning every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as students enter the building!

Can you believe we are already in November?! In reading, we are listening to, reading, and viewing a variety of texts and media that provide students with information about listening to each other and working out disagreements. In math, we will be focusing on strategies for multi-digit addition and subtraction within the range of 0 to 100. As the weather gets cooler, please make sure your child has a jacket and is dressed appropriately for the weather. Please be on the lookout for conference day information!
