Empty!
In chapel Wednesday, I showed the students things that were empty – a water bottle, a tissue box, a wallet, a gift bag. When these things are empty, it’s not good. For something to be empty when we expect it to be full is disappointing and frustrating.
That first Easter morning, the women went to Jesus’s tomb expecting to find guards, a stone sealing the entrance, and the body of Jesus laid inside. Nothing was as expected! The guards were AWOL, the stone was rolled out the way, and Jesus was not there. That morning, things did not look good. No one knew what happened. However that evening, they learned that empty can be awesome! That night, Jesus appeared to his disciples and followers who were gathered together. He showed his pierced hands, feet, and side. He proved himself to be alive.
The empty tomb speaks to Jesus’s resurrection. It gives witness to His defeat of sin and death. It shouts the victory of Jesus over the Devil and all his works and ways. Jesus won! And through faith in Him, His victory is ours. Forgiveness in Christ empties our sins. His victory gives our lives purpose as we live for God. The empty tomb is a symbol of the promise of eternal life in heaven with our Risen Lord and Savior.
Never has emptiness been so full of life, love, and promise! May we live each day in Easter joy!
Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed! Alleluia!
