CSMA Adviser Update
America needs journalists... and journalism teachers
We hope you are off to a great start in the new year!
If the student media you advise was not a CSMA member in 2018-19, consider joining over 200 media from across Colorado in our state association.
Whether you advise a CSMA-member or not, we will share this e-newsletter through J-Day.
After that, the newsletter becomes a membership benefit.
CSMA / The First 50 Years
The Colorado High School Press Association was renamed the Colorado Student Media Association in July, 2015. The name change was designed to make the organization a bit more accessible to ALL secondary school programs and to reflect the reality that students are working on new platforms, beyond print.
Deadline to register for J-Day, our state conference, is Sept. 20
All registration is done using an online form, and payment may be made online. We will be happy to invoice you, of course.
Pro Tip: Book your transportation just as soon as you can. Buses may park free on the CSU campus, near Moby Arena. It is a short walk directly east from this parking area. Buses are not allowed to drop off near the Lory Student Center.
Bonus Pro Tip: Campus parking tags go in the mail on Sept. 9, so any school requesting those tags needs to contact Jack Kennedy by Sunday. Any schools requesting parking tags after Sunday will need to pick up the tags at the CSMA registration table the morning of J-Day.
This week's 'news you can use'
SPLC welcomes you back to school
The Student Press Law Center is excited to offer a new way to connect with legal experts. Book a video-call through our Virtual Speakers Bureau. It's a popular offering, so we need 10 days' advance notice.
Speakers will join your classroom or the newsroom on a video call for up to 40 minutes (including Q&A) and present one of the following topics;
· High school student press freedom
· Copyright
· Freedom of Information / public records
· Libel and defamation
Did you receive a free SPLC poster in the mail? One side features the Year of the Student Journalist and ways to get involved. Come 2020, turn it around for information about SPLC's free services, including the legal hotline.
If you want one, contact Alexis Mason at amason@splc.org. Put "Poster" in the subject line and include your complete mailing address.
SPLC has updated its Back to School page to provide links to key topics that are likely to come up during the first few weeks of class.

Free adviser online learning course
The Missouri School of Journalism just launched a teaching resource that middle school/high school teachers would like and IT’S FREE! But it’s only going to be open to up to 300 teachers in its first year.
The Missouri School of Journalism has launched a free, 25-module online learning tool for middle school and high school teachers who want to teach or revamp their journalism or strategic communication lessons.
Each module contains learning objectives, short video lectures, worksheets and activities, quizzes and related resources. The topics covered include everything from audience engagement and audio storytelling to reporting and interviewing and journalism ethics.
Faculty from the School of Journalism brought extensive research and industry experience backgrounds together to produce content for the courses, says Amy Simons, associate professor at the School of Journalism, who helped produce the program. Professors in specialized areas were picked for specific modules.

Time to renew your CSMA memberships... or join us for the first time
Many schools choose to have more than one of their student media join our association, since all contest fees and critique fees are included in our dues. We offer modest price breaks to those schools, so check that out.
Can't remember if you have renewed or joined? You can always check out current membership list on our site.
