March 2024
A message from Career Academy Principal, Mr. Eric Kilburn
Happy March!
Early spring turns into summer quickly! We have conferences coming up on March 11th & 12th. Please take the opportunity to engage in conversations with your student's teachers. Even if they are doing well in class these teachers are your best resource to discuss college and career opportunities within their pathway coursework. We'd love to see you in person, but even if you can't make it, give us a call.
Save the date! Our Academy Showcase is happening on Thursday, May 9th beginning at 5 pm. A more formal invite will come soon but mark your calendars. This year we are doing our best to engage each of our pathways so that every one of the students that has taken coursework has an opportunity to shine. Don't miss out on this fun-filled evening!
A message from Career Academy School Counselor, Mr. Jeff Lucas
WITCC College Credit Courses---Fall 2024: Western Iowa Tech has their Fall 2022 schedule posted online. Students wanting to take additional college credit courses beyond what they are planning on taking at the Career Academy next year can register for classes online thru WITCC on campus WITCC courses. Students, see your home high school counselor or Mr. Lucas at the Career Academy to get registered for a class or classes.
Scholarships: Seniors, “Scholarship Season” is in full force right now. Make sure you are aware of any scholarship deadlines at the colleges you have applied to. Remember to be checking the monthly scholarship postings in your Canvas. They can be found in your Advisory/Homeroom Course.
FAFSA: There are still lots of seniors who have not submitted their FAFSA. Submitting the FAFSA can qualify you for grants, loans, and work study to assist with college tuition, room and board, and books. If you need assistance with completing your FAFSA see your high school counselor, Mr. Lucas at the Career Academy or you can book online assistance from the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) at https://www.icansucceed.org/about-ican/ican-locations#Sioux%20City

HARRY HOPKINS HAPPENINGS
Harry Hopkins student attend post-secondary welding event - Mr. Terry Gardner and Mr. Jim Martin, Instructors
On February 28th Mr. Gardner and Mr. Martin from Harry Hopkins took several kids to an open house to South Sioux City High School to learn about a welding post-secondary school (Western Welding Academy) from Gillette, Wyoming . Mr. Sheley the manufacturing teacher from SSC invited us to this awesome day which included over 12 schools and 175 students participating. The event was held in their gym with teachers from the academy interacting with the students and demonstrating skills they will learn if they choose to enroll in their school. Western Welding academy calls their tour the “blue collar tour”. They travel all over the country and talk with 30 selected schools in 60 days. Their main focus is to have students, instructors and schools continue to understand the need of trades workers in our country. To top it off, they gave away prizes, hands on time in the welding booths and had a luncheon. Our students from all three high schools said it was an amazing day and hope we can do something like that in the future.
District News
Coming Soon: Conditions for Learning Survey
All Iowa public school districts are required to administer an annual school climate and culture survey to students in grades 3-12 called Conditions for Learning Survey. The survey is designed to measure their engagement in school, safety, and the overall learning environment. The survey will be administered to students in April.
Parents and families of students in preschool through grade 12 will also have the opportunity to participate in the Parent Conditions for Learning Survey. The survey contains similar items to those on the student survey, focusing on areas that range from student safety and positive adult and student relationships to school rules and how they are enforced. Participation in the survey is encouraged, but it is completely voluntary, and all questions are optional to answer.
Please watch your email for more information on the survey.
