He hono tangata e kore e motu; ka pa he taura waka e motu
Unlike a canoe rope, a human bond cannot be severed.
Kia Ora Koutou Parents and Macleans Primary Whānau
Well here we are in March...where does the time go! We are well into PP1, the first Planning Period of 2025. The focus of the Inquiry and learning for PP1 is the Social Studies and History Curriculum Motetea: A Window Into the World of Our Ancestors.
Extra-curricula events re a plenty at Macleans Primary and there has been much going on at Macleans Primary recently, from sports to Junior Breakfasts. The local community has also been very busy as they are offering many activities to involve yourself in, from sports to drama. You can read all about the activities and offerings in this and previous newsletters and notices.
Are you a pet owner? Have a look at the Bixxy Box fundraiser below as it could be a 'win-win' for the school and your pet(s).
The Board will be meeting next Monday night, 10 March. There is the usual focus on finance and property, but at this time of the year there is also focus on the Macleans Primary Annual & Strategic plan for 2025.. On the Macleans Primary School website will soon be the Board minutes from previous meetings, another way in which we endeavour to foster a meaningful and strong home-school partnership. BoT minutes will be published on the website a few weeks after the meeting to allow time for official 'approval' of the minutes.
Please remember to check your personal kindo accounts, and if you do not have a kindo account you can see instructions below in this newsletter on how to set one up.

The Macleans Learning Pathway: Update for 2025
The Macleans Learning Pathway is very much alive, although hibernating at the moment as we review how it aligns with the changes to the New Zealand Curriculum. A reminder that the Macleans Learning Pathway (MLP) is designed to show parents, children and teachers where children sit on the NZ Curriculum (NZC) measure in Reading, Writing and Maths and the PROGRESS within the NZC. Macleans Primary wants to share and celebrate the progress with all children and support parents and teachers in knowing the next learning steps. Watch this space for MLP updates and implementation in 2025.

Digital Tech & Cybersafety at Macleans Primary
Macleans Primary has a few different levels/support for cyber-security and digital safety. The first is the N4L (or Network for Learning) is an MoE supported network dedicated to supporting schools and kura. The N4L provides expert guidance on what we need to do to reduce the risk of any identified threats and vulnerabilities. The N4L also can support Macleans Primary through a cybersecurity incident, should we need. The N4L proactively monitors the network and will let us know if they discover any cybersecurity risks or issues at our school.
The meangingful home-school partnership that Macleans Primary promotes and the Macleans Values are two other ways in which we support digital citizenship and cyber-safety. We encourage all parents to please be in contact with us if we can support with a cyber-safety or online issue happening at home. Our Macleans Values refer to children promoting good use of technologies through the three key word of Respect, Responsibility and Cooperation. We promote cyber-safety and digital citizenship through the values in class and during assembly times.
Another level of digital safety and cuber-security that we use at Macleans Primary is Netsafe and Hectors World. Netsafe is used by teachers to help children with digital safety and help them become good digital citizens. Similarly, Hectors World is typically a junior-middle school website that helps younger children understand what it means to be a 'good digital citizen'. For more information on the N4L, Hectors World and Netsafe, please go to the websites below:

Safe Drinking Water – Town Supply
Macleans Primary School provides safe, clean water for drinking and sanitary purposes as part of our overall health and safety responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and the Building Regulations 1992. We are connected to the local water supply and the local authorities are responsible for our school water supply and quality. We follow Ministry of Education and Taumata Arowai (https://www.taumataarowai.govt.nz/) guidance by:
- providing enough water for all staff, students, and visitors for normal daily use
- storing water for emergency purposes
- providing at least one drinking fountain for every 60 students - we have 8 water fountain nozzles, which is sufficient for 480 children. We are reviewing another source of water for the children.
- running drinking taps briefly at the start of each day to ensure pipes are free of heavy metals that can build up overnight (this is part of the caretaker's duties in the morning)
- checking school facilities and attending to water supply maintenance issues promptly
- complying with Clause G12 - Water Supplies of the Building Regulations 1992
- ensuring management of our water supply is included in our 10 Year Property Plan
- conserving water where possible
- testing our water supply if required by Taumata Arowai or the Ministry of Education's agent (Argest).
Y3 and Y4 EOTC: Botanic Gardens
The Year 4s had a wonderful excursion to the Auckland Botanical Gardens. It was adventure packed and energy fuelled creating a camping experience like no idea. Orienteering, map reading, cooking and tent building were some of the skills that were harnessed. A fun day out amongst nature was a great way to do some outdoor learning. Thanks to the mums and dads for the great support and help, including the BBQ!
