November Newsletter
2019
October is one of La Center United's busiest months and this year was no different! We spent the past month connecting with youth, parents, and other community members on various special projects:
- We celebrated Red Ribbon Week by "Planting the Promise" with youth and community members from our community. We planted tulips as a reminder to enjoy the outdoors, connect with nature, take a break from daily stress and see the rewards of something beautiful the community nurtured together.
- The Loft is open and thriving! Every Wednesday we have had a handful of youth come and hang out with us. We have had the Library join us for a fun Rubik cube mosaic activity, held ping pong tournaments, and had a fun Halloween party!
- La Center United attended parent teacher conferences at the middle school to connect with parents and highlight some of our special projects. This year we are focusing on building up youth members and volunteers at The Loft, working on developing a Positive Community Norms campaign with GSA students and community members, and work on a Locks Save Lives policy change with the City of La Center.
- We held our monthly coalition meeting that focused on educating the community on the health risks associated with vaping. If you missed this meeting you can always read what happened at our meetings by going to our website.
- We held our bi-annual Drug Take Back event in coordination with other coalitions in Clark County! La Center/Cowlitz Public Safety contributed 143 pounds, which is double the amount collected from our April 2019 event!
We are still collecting Community Surveys!
Please consider completing this short survey that asks about your views on youth behavior in La Center. We will use this information to help us better understand your thoughts and feelings in order to better serve youth in our community.
November Events:
Coalition Meeting
La Center K-8 Library
November 14, 2019, 5:30-6:30pm
November's Coalition Meeting will focus on:
Vape Project
Kalyn Flatt, Senior at Columbia River
For Kalyn’s Senior Project, she wanted to test the reliability of nicotine levels marketed on vape products. She wanted to see if the nicotine levels that were marketed on vape juices matched what was really inside the bottle. Kalyn will walk us through her experiment and disclose her preliminary findings.
Target Zero
Hilary Torres, Target Zero Manager
Washington State has adopted Target Zero — a goal to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on Washington's roadways to zero by the year 2030. The goal is zero deaths and serious injuries, because every life counts. Hilary will present on their efforts and answer any questions the community may have.
Need a reminder? Say you're going on Facebook and you'll get a reminder the day of the event!
Language of Stigma
Online Learning Opportunity
November 18, 2019, 1:00-2:00pm
Words have the power to hurt or heal. By intentionally choosing language that is not stigmatizing, we can begin to unravel the negative stereotypes associated with substance use disorders.
