Winter Weather
It is important that children be appropriately dressed for the existing weather conditions. Students are expected to follow the behavior guidelines in the student handbook during recess. It is the Livonia Public Schools practice that elementary school students will remain indoors when the temperature with the wind chill falls below 15 degrees Fahrenheit. We will use the AccuWeather application (Real Feel/current) for updated weather conditions. We do not use hourly, we use current.
From Mrs. Serazio - Character Trait for January is Grit
Happy New Year! This month’s character trait is GRIT… a trait we have been hearing a lot about from the Lions Coach Campbell. Grit, that combination of passion, purpose, and perseverance has been identified as a key to success! In an age of instant gratification, where answers are just a Google search away, and 'easy' seems to be the mantra, cultivating grit becomes essential. It equips students with the ability to face challenges head-on, to persevere when things aren’t looking up, and to bounce back with even more zeal.
Did you ever think that a marshmallow could teach grit? Well, think again. A fun, gritty, family activity could be The Spaghetti Marshmallow Tower Challenge. In this activity, participants use spaghetti, tape, string, and a marshmallow to build the tallest freestanding structure without it collapsing. Sounds simple? It's trickier than it appears. Often, initial structures will collapse, pushing students to tweak their strategies. The lesson here? Innovation, resilience, and the value of trial and error = grit.
If marshmallow building isn’t your thing, you can have your child practice grit by making their bed, putting away their toys, or working on a skill such as taking basketball shots or practicing an instrument. Setting goals as a family is a great way to help students develop their passions and interests and feel good about themselves. So, embrace the grit, teach your child it is ok to fail and try again and if you want to share some exciting, gritty news, please email me at jserazio2@livoniapublicschools.org.
PBIS
Thank you to all the families who returned the PBIS commitment sheet included with our pamphlet. Our staff and students are dedicated to being respectful, responsible, and safe as stated in our Positive Behavior Matrix. Students can earn “red tickets” for following the matrix expectations. Every Friday, teachers pull two red tickets, and the students can come to the lobby for a special prize!
Medications and Health Information - Please read!
If your child has a medical condition and/or requires medication at school, please download the forms your child needs for school, based on their health conditions (Life-Threatening Food and/or Insect Allergy, Allergy IHCP, Asthma, Diabetes, Seizure Disorder). New forms must be completed by you and your child’s physician each year (dated after the last day of school of the previous school year). Please ensure that the forms include both your signature and your child’s doctor’s signature. We cannot dispense any medication without these completed forms. Forms can be found on our school website under the parent tab as “Health Forms”.
Medications and forms can be brought to the school office anytime moving forward. Don't delay in sharing medical updates as you get updated information.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Serazio at jserazio2@livoniapublicschools.org.

Art with Ms. Salvia
We had another fun week in art! 2nd-4th graders continued learning about Value as an Element of Art. We took the time for further practice mixing paint to create a range of values from light to dark. Using a range of light, medium, and dark values, we can make a drawing or painting look 3-D. Check out our paintings of spheres below! Young 5's through 1st grade had fun beginning a new project this week. We talked about Canadian artist, Ted Harrison, who paints with bright colors and often wintery scenes. We began by painting in a wintery background with bright, fun colors. Next, we created adorable polar bears that will be added to the backgrounds next week!
Our Cub Crew artists also had a wonderful week in art. We had so much fun using a variety of items to decorate our Paper Roll "Monsters!" We had fun exploring different sensory items like feathers, pipe cleaners, and pom-poms to make our monster crafts come to life.
Wishing everyone a safe and warm long weekend in celebration and honor of MLK day. See you next week in art!

PLTW with Mr. Morrow
Hello Scientists and Families,
This week in Project Lead the Way we have been focused on the explore step of the design process. In Kindergarten students learned about the classic story "Jack and the Beanstalk," we discussed the structure and function of the beanstalk and built our own beanstalk out of various materials. 1st graders are learning about coding. We worked toward mastery by having an independent opportunity to write a code for Rosie the Robotic Dog.. 2nd graders are learning about the form and function of different items. This week our students made an invention of their to create a wind dispersed seed using a leaf blower to test! 3rd graders are learning about the science of flight, We build a glider of our own to demonstrate the four forces of flight. 4th graders are learning all about energy, we used our VEX IQ kits to build a pull back racer, this demonstrates that energy can be stored as potential energy and released as kinetic.
We are looking forward to moving forward in the design process as we continue to explore these concepts as we continue to explore new learning opportunities.
See you next week,
Mr. Morrow
LMC with Mr. Pinta
This week students in second through fourth grade completed their digital citizenship unit with "Protecting Yourself Online: Creating Strong Passwords." Students participated in another Curipod where they learned, answered questions, and played a game involving what makes a strong password, the purpose of a password online, and how to create a strong password. Even though our journey may be finished, we will continue to revisit digital citizenship and they will continue learning about it next year as well.
Kindergarten and first grade students met "Head" of the "Digital Citizens." Head taught students to think when learning about something new online, and to be curious and ask questions. Students learned the term "unbelievable" and were encouraged to always be curious and ask questions when learning new things online, with their parents and teachers being great resources when these questions arise.

Music with Ms. Grammatico
4th graders continued practicing "E" on the recorder. They also began practicing switching from "E" to "G." They added the triangle part to "A Wise Old Owl" and learned a new part on the rhythm sticks.
3rd graders learned about Martin Luther King and played rhythm sticks to some words inspired by MLK. They added the triangle part to "A Wise Old Owl" and learned a new part on the rhythm sticks.
2nd graders continued the game Charlie Over the Ocean and practiced "Two Tall Telephone Poles." They also all got to lead their own dance moves in the song "Did You Ever See A Lassie."
Kindergarten and 1st graders learned a few new songs about bees! They used scarves to move around like bees and did a dance to Vivaldi's "Winter" from Four Seasons.
