🏫 A Note from your Administration 🏫
Hello, Husmann Parents & Guardians!
With our weather starting to change leading up to break, and hopefully here to stay after break, we are looking for some help from our families. Staff have been having routine conversations with students in and out of the classroom along the lines of getting along with and interacting with one another. Staff build in ways to re-teach, model and 'coach' students through situations each day at school but this is where we need your help at home too!
Here are some questions to practice with your Cougar over the course of these next two weeks and beyond:
- How do you choose who to play with at recess and what types of games/activities/sports do you play? Are other students included?
- When you lose in a game/sport, or want to go and do something else, what do you do? Do the other kids say anything to you?
- When you don't like how the game or activity is going, or you and a friend disagree, what do you say to them/them to you? Do you ever take turns playing one day what you want and the next day doing what your friends want to do?
- Think of a situation your child brought up that they encountered somewhere at school (recess, during stations, by lockers, in encores, while eating in the cafeteria, etc). Was kindness shown to the other person? Did you use kind words or yell and get physical? How else could that situation been handled differently?
Thank you for your willingness to partner with us here at school!
Your Partners in Education,
Mr. Sromek, Principal & Ms. Fitzgerald, Assistant Principal
💜💛 Yearbooks! 💛💜
Tuesday, 3/18 is the very last day to submit custom pages. The first two pages are free, you just have to log onto TreeRing to customize them. All 5th grade yearbooks are free this year and should be in their accounts so these families can also take advantage of the custom pages. Note: if a 5th grader does not have a TreeRing account, they will still get a yearbook at the end of the year. The deadline to order yearbooks is 4/18. "Candyland" If anyone orders a yearbook after this date, there is still a chance that it is delivered to the school but it will not come with the bulk of them. If anyone has any questions, please email husmannyearbook@gmail.com.
To order your yearbook, please visit Treering here: HUS Yearbook
Use our school's passcode: 1015547582424576
You can still add your custom pages too so head to the site!
How does writing help my child be a better reader?
Writing is the reading process slowed down. Writing is a tremendous help to your child’s reading success. Write at home and on-the-go.
Carry a small notebook and pencil and let your child see you use it to make a to-do list -- “Go by the bank, pick up dry cleaning, etc.” Get a notebook for your child to write in as well. She can make a list of favorite foods, ideas for the weekend, etc.
Start a family journal. Keep a pad on the kitchen counter. Each member of the family can contribute by recording happenings -- the dog going to the vet, the weather being rainy, something happening at school, for example. At the end of the week, read aloud from the journal after dinner.
Have family members send e-mails to your child. Your child can read them when he gets home from school, improving his reading skills, and then respond back, improving his writing skills. No computer? Then leave your child a note and have him respond with a note to you.
Have your child write what he remembers about the day -- almost missing the bus, a new kid in the class, having pizza for lunch, going to specials/encores, for example. You’ll learn something about their day, and your child will have the opportunity to reflect on the day.
This list-making game is never the same twice. Players have 45 seconds to write as many words as possible in a given category -- things that are red, for example. Then players, in turn, call off the words on their lists. If someone else has the word on his list, all players cross off the word. The player with the highest number of unique responses wins.
📱⌚ Reminder: Smart Electronics (phones and/or watches) ⌚📱
Reminder: According to the Student Handbook '24-'25 smart phones and/or smart watches "must be kept powered-off and out-of-sight during the regular school day unless: (a) the supervising teacher grants permission; (b) use of the device is provided in a student’s individualized education program (IEP); (c) it is needed in an emergency that threatens the safety of students, staff, or other individuals".(Note: District 47 treats any electronic device with the capability to call, text, connect to the internet, or take photos as an electronic device. If a student needs to make an emergency call during the day, the student should request permission to go to the main office and use the phone. If parents need to contact their child during the day, they should call the school’s main office.)
Kindergarten Dual Language
Families who currently have a child enrolled in the dual language program MUST complete the registration process for their incoming kindergarten student by Friday, March 21 to guarantee their place in the program.
