Attendance Matters!
Parents,
As we begin the 2nd semester, it is a perfect time to remind you of the importance of your child being at school all day, every day! Attendance is critical to your child's success and missing even a few minutes of the day creates frustration in our students, they struggle to catch up during the day, and it can cause a student to fall behind. Here are some attendance facts and reminders for you...
- A child who is absent 18 or more days during the school year for ANY reason becomes a state statistic and is considered "chronically absent". This means the child misses 10% or more of the school year which impedes academic growth and success. Also, the only way we are going to improve our state report card from a 99 to a 100 is to decrease the number of students who are chronically absent.
- Attendance is a huge factor in a student's school success academically, socially, and emotionally.
- The HCS Student Code of Conduct clearly explains the district's attendance policy. Click here to access this document. The attendance portion begins on page 59.
- Students with 5 or more unexcused absences will be required to meet with an administrator and will be placed in the district's truancy watch program. Students remain in the truancy program for the rest of the school year and the following year.
- Parents are allowed to write 9 notes for excused absences when a child is sick or there is a death in the family. These notes MUST have a parent signature and be received within 3 school days of the student returning to school after the absence.
- If you know your child needs to be absent for travel or another reason that is not otherwise excusable, a parent can submit an anticipated absence form. It is found on our website. This MUST be received at least 3 days prior to the absence and should include a reason for the absence.
- Tardies (checking in or out) can cause a child to get off track for the entire day and can impact the child academically, as well as emotionally. Please make every effort to get to school ON TIME. Students enter their classrooms at 7:35 and get started for the day.
- If your child is sick and goes to the doctor, it is always best to get a doctor's excuse and send it to the school. Then, the absence does not count as a parent note.
We are going to be celebrating students with perfect attendance each month this semester. Perfect attendance is no absences or tardies for the month. We are also going to have a contest by grade level for the best attendance each month. Thanks for helping us maintain excellence at school in this way.
