Hamlin Middle School Newsletter
December 2024
Principal's Message
Greetings Hamlin Families,
Thank you so much to all of the families who joined us for student led conferences on November 21st and 22nd! Below you will see the table of participation last year vs. this year. I would love to see our percentage of families increase to 75% next year!
Honor Roll
I am so proud of how our students performed academically during 1st quarter! 337/576 students (58.5%) of our students earned a 3.0 GPA or above. We will be having an Honor "Roll" Party next Wednesday December, 11th during Advisory. Students will come down to the Commons and be celebrated with Cinnamon Rolls and gratitude from our Admin Staff.
Behavioral Data
The first two graphs represent our behavior triangle. A healthy school culture is one where 80-85% of students fall within the green. The triangle on the left represents the 2023-24 school year and the one on the right represents where we are up to the end of November. Currently 95.1% of our Hamlin students have received 0-1 major behavior referrals.
The second two graphs are a comparison of major referrals per day for 2023-24 and 2024-25. The graph on the left shows that during the month of November 2023 we were averaging 14.71 behavior referrals per day and in November of 2024, we are averaging 2.91 referrals per day.
We continue to celebrate students in a variety of ways to promote positive behavior and build a positive school culture.

Family Belonging Survey
At Hamlin, we are focusing our efforts this year on improving academics by improving the sense of belonging for both our students and their families. We want everyone to feel as though they belong at Hamlin Middle School, so we need to know where we can improve.
Please take a minute to fill out this 15-question survey so that we can take your feedback to our Student Voice team, our teachers and counselors, and our admin team and create meanigful opportunities for everyone to feel like they belong at Hamlin.
TAG Referral Process
Spring 2025 TAG identification is right around the corner and we are beginning to take referrals for our program. The SPS Talented and Gifted program assesses through district wide tests and classroom work samples whether or not your student has the potential to perform at the 95%ile or above in the areas of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies and/or Intellectual giftedness. The 95%ile means that if your student was in a line of 100 students, they would know more than the first 95 students in line. These students are at the top of their class, and typically above most students at their entire grade level at school and require more advanced work to meet them at their rate and level of learning, keeping them challenged.
Teachers, families and specialists can all refer students for identification if they feel they meet the criteria. Students must be referred for screening no later than February 28, in order for TAG contacts to be able to gather data for the upcoming testing session. If you would like to refer your child, please reach out to your child’s teacher for information on where your child is at academically and to start the referral process.
After you refer them for screening, the teacher will share with you the questionnaires, along with our preponderance of evidence form to begin filling out for your student. At this time the teacher will begin gathering together the work samples and testing data in a TAG referral file. If your family has any more information to add to the files, please share them with your child’s teacher when you return the questionnaire. All of this data will be used to create a “preponderance” of evidence in order to determine if the student will/will not qualify for the TAG program in one or more areas.
Thank you for your support and please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or David Wasserman, HMS TAG Contact.
Thank you!
Thank you for your continued partnership in fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment for our students. As we celebrate the growth and achievements of this school year, we remain committed to continuous improvement to ensure every student thrives. Together, we can empower our students to reach their fullest potential.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out! You are always welcome to walk the halls with me and see for yourself how awesome our kids are!
Warm regards,
Brandi Starck
Principal
Student Voice
HMS Student Voice held it's first meeting on December 2nd.
The Student Voice group is designed to include members from different affinity groups, ensuring a diverse representation of perspectives. The first meeting focused on the purpose of student voice, specifically how students can help build a positive school culture.
We believe that empowering our students to voice their opinions and experiences is essential to creating a positive school culture. This group will not only foster understanding but also encourage peer support and collaboration.
During the twice monthly meetings, student leaders will delve into various topics that impact their educational experiences. They will then be tasked with sharing the insights and information discussed with their peers, promoting a culture of awareness and accountability throughout the school.
As an Exit Ticket students were asked, "What is one thing you wish every student was aware of?" Below are just a few of the responses from the group and some photos from our first meeting.
Family Resource Center
Hamlin Food Pantry will be open on December 20th from 1:00-4:00 in the Hamlin Family Resource Center.
We are collecting items for our holiday store for students. If you have any new or gently used items to donate, we would gladly take them!
Please feel free to reach out to Kahlea if you have needs around, food, clothing, or supplies for your family.
Hamlin Holiday Store
In December, our students have the opportunity to use their Logger Loot to buy holiday gifts for themselves or others. We are looking for new or gently used items for our store. To donate, please send them in to our Family Resource Center. We have created an Amazon wish list if you are able and willing to provide an item or two for our store. You can access the wish list at this link https://a.co/9xI0tRq
