Mrs. Mulvanerty's Update
August 18, 2024

May 25, 2025
Hello SKS!
Tomorrow is Memorial Day—a time to remember and honor men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. For many of us, this day brings to mind not just names in history books, but friends or family we've personally known -- or their stories at least. I think of my Great Uncle Tom, for whom my dad was named. I never had the chance to meet him—he died during the battle on Normandy Beach -- but when I pause to reflect on his courage, his sacrifice, and the life he gave up at such a young age, I’m filled awe at his bravery. His story, like so many others, reminds me that the freedom we enjoy today came at a great cost.
Today, when I visited St. Paul’s in Stone Harbor, the priest (I didn’t catch his name) reminded us of a beautiful and powerful tradition in our Church: the St. Michael the Archangel Prayer. He explained that Pope Leo XIII wrote this prayer in 1886 as a way for the faithful to ask for protection—It was often prayed during World War One, a time of great global unrest. When I read a little more about this today, I learned that Pope Leo was moved to write the prayer when he sensed a growing need for strength, peace, and protection in the world. The prayer goes like this:
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
This prayer continues to resonate today. It’s not only a prayer for soldiers or nations at war—it's also for anyone facing their own personal battles: students facing stress, families navigating uncertainty, and anyone who feels overwhelmed by the challenges life can bring. The St. Michael Prayer is a reminder that we are never alone. God's help—and the help of His angels—is always near to bring us courage and strength.
Wherever you are this weekend -- whether it’s the beach, the Wayne Parade, at a cookout, or simply enjoying some quiet time at home—let’s pause to remember the real meaning of this day. Consider saying a prayer for those we’ve lost in service to our country and for anyone facing battles of their own.
And -- to all of our community members who have served in the military—thank you. Your courage, dedication, and sacrifice inspire us. Wishing you all peace, rest, and moments of joy this weekend.

Mark Your Calendars : SKS Fall Classic!
October 6, 2025
The SKS Fall Classic on October 6, 2025 is a tremendous opportunity to bring our entire SKS community together, while raising some significant dollars for the school!
The day is a combination of events that start with a racquet outing at Overbrook Golf Club, a golf outing at Philadelphia Country Club, and a reception at Philadelphia Country Club that evening. It is open to all friends of SKS, which means we are casting our fundraising net beyond the current parents that includes alumni, alumni parents, and parishioners. All proceeds will go to benefit the school through the governance of the annual fund. We have the capacity for 30 foursomes, around 50 racquets players, and 250 dinner reception tickets. Some portions of those categories have been pre-sold as part of larger sponsorships, so I strongly encourage anyone with interest to jump on the ticket information here to register.
Thank you for your continued support of SKS and we look forward to seeing you on October 6th!
