Field Trip Fun!
Tissues needed!
Seasonal allergies and runny noses have hit GP. We went through an entire box of tissues in just one day this week! We are in need of tissues to finish out the year. Anyone able to send in a box to get us through these last 4 weeks, we would appreciate it! :)
A Peek at Our Week
Writing: This week, we continued working with our realistic fiction character in our series of stories. Writers learned that once they finish one adventure for their character, they can think of a new adventure using the same character. We can write stories about our character getting lost or getting hurt. We can write stories about our character overcoming a challenge or fear. We can write stories about our character being brave or scared. So many stories to tell! We also learned that we can write "book one" of the series, where we introduce our reader to our character. Who is our character? Who is in their family? Do they have a best friend? Do the have any siblings or pets?
Math: This week, we worked with 1 more, 10 more, 1 less, and 10 less than a given number. We also reviewed greater than and less than symbols to compare numbers (<, >). Students worked with reading and writing numbers beyond 100. They used the tens and ones chart to help them see that 10 tens is 100, 11 tens is 110, 12 tens is 120, etc. We really worked hard on saying the numbers correctly. We prefer for students to say the number 103 as "one hundred three" NOT "one hundred and three". We talked about how the word "and" in math means a decimal point, which they will learn about later in their schooling. If they build the good habit of saying numbers correctly now, it will be less confusing later on when they use decimals. Next week, we will continue to work in Module 6 and practice adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers.
Word Study: This week, we worked with <er>. We reviewed our secret stories for <er, ir, ur>. We worked with a variety of words such as her, fern, bird, skirt, hurt, burn, etc. Next week, we will work with <oi> and <oy>.
So. Much. Happening.
The end of the year brings many fun things. But also many things for the grown-ups to remember. Here is a compiled list of everything we currently know about!
**Please note** There is a slight error below on our Dates to Remember. Fast Bridge testing is May 14 and 15 (not May 13 and 14).
