Decatur community,
Another Homecoming has come and gone, and even amongst traditional events and similarities to years past, this Homecoming still found its ways to be unique:
The school was abuzz with thoughts of victory. Compared to the past few years, the level of confidence and excitement about the high school football team is through the roof, and it radiated throughout the entire week's festivities.
The crowd was packed and electric. The bleachers were as full as I have seen them. I usually have a few rows of empty seating both in front of and behind me, but that solitude was gladly gone.
Another thing that was a first for me was hearing the chant, "He's a Freshman" cascading from the student section at a high school football game, as freshman Kaden Sowers had a dominant performance scoring on a touchdown bomb from Williby on the first play, running in another, and even adding a pick-six as well. In a night filled with dominant performances all around by the Red Devils, it was great to see a 9th grade student have such an awesome evening.
SHOUTOUTS
This week the shoutouts are Homecoming heavy.
Shoutout to our football team. Homecomings across the nation are focused around one specific football game each year, and then you turn around and have a dance right afterwards. As a competitive person, I know I wouldn't be in a dancing mood if I had just lost a football game. (not that I ever really am) Luckily, the boys were dominant in their 52-6 win. Next week, it's off to take on unbeaten and ranked St. Francis. If we're not ranked after last Friday, check back in a week.
Shoutout to all of the HS students for their tremendous participation in Homecoming. On Thursday night, the students showed great participation in both the bonfire and the float building competition. On Friday, their vacation destination competition truly amped up with winter vacation, cruise ship, Hawaiian luau, and jungle safari as the chosen float themes. The sophomores and the jungle safari took home the win.
Shoutout to the entire community for showing up. It was an awesome evening, the first time that I have been to a game and the stands genuinely looked full. As a player, looking to your home stands and seeing that support sends a rush of adrenaline through you, so I hope that everyone truly understands how much of an impact that level of support has.
Shoutout to Mrs. Jillian Springer. Mrs Springer organized the Homecoming Assembly, the schedule for the week, and sponsored the dance. It's a big, stressful task, and she handled it well. I'd say I hope she gets some rest time today, but today STUCO will be cleaning up the post-dance mess.
Shoutout to Ms. Teresa Saul and the cheerleaders. Mrs. Saul did a great job of getting everyone involved and excited during the initial bonfire parade. The cheerleaders really stepped up and put on a performance this year.
Shoutout to Molly Olson and Gabe Anderson. The annual tradition is to bring back the 10 year queen and king (athlete) to give a speech. Neither was able to make it, but Gabe was in the court 10 years ago, and Molly was in the court 20 years ago (I didn't believe it at first). This is perhaps my favorite traditional portion of the DCHS Homecoming. 10 years is a lot of time, and that was expressed by both of our speakers. I love seeing these former graduates that come back and appear so professional. Molly conveyed a very heartfelt and humorous message, and Gabe gave a vivid remembrance of his Homecoming, a game that was eerily similar to ours this past Friday. DCHS and the community should be proud of the quality of adults that they have become and the way they represented.
Shoutout to athletic director Brandon Gehring for trying to spread the news. Mr. Gehring recently created a DCHS High School Activities Instragram page: dchs_red_devils . If there are 200 subscribers by Tuesday, donuts will be purchased for all students. We'll see. We started last week and we were near 100. Maybe this weekend will be the major push. The Instragram page is connected to the district Facebook page, so updates will come there as well when posted to Instagram.
Shoutout to all of those that helped with serving hot dogs and hamburgers at the pep rally event. It was greatly appreciated as always.
Shoutout to the fire department for coming out and lighting and monitoring the fire for the event.
Shoutout to the local police department for providing an escort and watching roads during the pep rally and the parade event.
Shoutout to Ron's Tire, the Wasson family, and Mr. Bricker for providing the amazing convertibles to transport our royal court. I am definitely glad that the wet weather (while appreciated) waited until I started writing this. I would also include a huge thanks to all that provided a trailer or truck to pull a float.
Shoutout to our 2024 King and Queen Garrett Emigh and Makadyn Ketterl. They are both great kids that represent DCHS and the community well. It's hard to believe that these are two students that I first met as they were coming off of their freshman year. Like our past king and queen mentioned, time flies.
